WHAT ARE MANGROVES?

Mangroves Are Tropical Plants That Are

Adapted To Lose, Wet Soils, Salt Water And
Being Periodically Submerged By Tides.
Types Of Mangrove
1. Red Mangroves
EG. Rhizophora
2. Black Mangroves
EG. Avicennia
3. White Mangroves
EG. Laguncularia Racemose
4. Buttonwood Mangroves
EG, Conocarpus Erectus
MANGROVE PROTECTION

• Mangrove Protection Means Safeguarding Mangrove Forests From Harm Or Destruction Through Various

Conservation Measures Like Laws, Restoration Efforts, And Awareness Campaign

• By Taking Actions Like Preserving Their Habitats, Stopping Illegal Activities, And Educating People About Their

Importance.

• Mangroves Provide Ecological And Societal Benefits To Local Communities.

• Mangroves Serve As Breeding And Nursing Grounds For Numerous Marine And Pelagic Species.

• They Offer Valuable Resources Such As Food, Medicine, Fuel, And Building Materials. Mangroves Also Provide

Opportunities For Aquaculture.

MANGROVE PROTECTS FROM
FLOOD
Wave Attenuation:
• A Reduction In The Energy Of A Traveling Wave
Dense Network Of Roots, Trunks, And Branches
• Create Friction -Slowing Down - Incoming Waves
• Reduces Waves Height-force Significantly-coastline
• Reduce Wave Energy By Up To 66% In The First 100 Meters
MANGROVE PROTECTION FROM FLOOD
Strom Surge Buffer
• Physical Barriers
• Wide Mangrove Forests Act As A Physical Obstacle,
• Impeding The Progress Of Storm Surges
• The Rise In Sea Level Caused By Storms.
• This Reduces The Surge’s Reach And Minimizes
• The Amount Of Floodwater Inundating Coastal Areas.
MANGROVE PROTECTS FROM CYCLONES
Reduce flooding-
The dense network of mangrove roots and trunks acts
like a buffer
Reduce wave energy by up to two-thirds in the first 100
meters of forest width.
This weakens the impact of the surge on reaching the
coast.

Sediment stabilization:
The root structure of mangroves also helps trap

Stabilize sediment, preventing coastal erosion caused by

the powerful winds and waves of a cyclone.

This protects coastlines and infrastructure.

MANGROVE PROTECTS FROM TSUNAMIS
Energy Absorption –
• Dense Mangrove Roots And Tangled Branches Act Like A
Buffer,
• Absorbing The Energy Of Incoming Waves
• And Reducing Their Height And Force.
• This Weakens The Tsunami Before It Reaches Land.
Wave Deflection –
• Mangroves Can Deflect The Direction Of The Wave
• Guiding It Away From Directly Hitting The Coast
• This Can Help Reduce Flooding And Property Damage
MANGROVE PROTECTION AS TSUNAMIS
Sediment Trapping:
• The Root Systems Of Mangroves Trap Sediment
• Helps Build Up The Coastline
• Create A Shallower Slope.
• This Shallower Area Further Reduces The Power Of The Tsunami
• The Wave Dissipates Its Energy Over A Greater Distance.
