Transactional Analysis
 It was Developed by Eric Berne during the 1950s.
 It is a psychoanalytic theory and method of
therapy.
 Method of analyzing and understanding
interpersonal behavior.
 When a person interact, there is social
transaction in which one person responds to
another . The study of these transactions
between people is called Transactional analysis

Ego States

• It represents a person’s way of thinking,


feeling and behaving .
• There are three ego states present in everyone
: child, parent and adult.
• They are related to behaviour of a person and
not his age.

(a) Child Ego
 Child Behaviour reflects a person’s response to
communicate in the form of joy , sorrow ,
frustration or curiosity . These are the natural
feelings that people learn as children . It reflects
immediate action and immediate satisfaction.
• A child can be :-
(i) Natural child
(ii) Adaptive child
(iii) Rebellious child

(b) Parent ego

• The parent ego states includes the attitudes and


behaviours of all those people who are
emotionally significant and act as parent. People
belonging to parent ego state are very
protective ,isolated and honest by nature.
This can be:-
(i) Nurturing parent ego – Such people caring by
nature .
(ii) Negative or critical parent ego- ignore poor
performance rather than help to improve that.

(c) Adult ego

• Adult behaviour reflects the ability to analysis


the situation and take logical decisions. He
overcomes the emotional feelings and take
decisions based on facts and figures. This state
is based upon reasoning , thinking , experience ,
rationality and discussion based on facts.
• Such people treat others with equality and
consider them as responsible and valuable .

Behaviour of a person depends upon his experience
at different stages of his life .They fall into four
categories:-

Johari window model

• It was designed by American psychologists


joseph Luft and Harry Ingham in 1955 While
researching group dynamics at the university
of California.
• The model name is derived from combining
the two names joseph and harry ( Jo + hari ) .
• Based on the concept that trust can be gained
by revealing information about yourself to
others, then you learn more about yourself
from other people’s perceptions of you.
