Mountain
Ranges
Differentiate mountains,
mountain ranges and mountain
belts from one another
Pictures of the Himalayan Mountain Range and the Andes Mountain Range
Answer:
HIMALAYAS
The Himalayas, or Himalaya, is a mountain
range in Asia, separating the plains of the
Indian subcontinent from the Tibetan
Plateau. The range has some of the Earth's
highest peaks, including the highest, Mount
Everest; more than 100 peaks exceeding
elevations of 7,200 m above sea level lie in
the Himalayas.
ASALT MSNIOATNU
Describe each picture and differentiate those pictures from one another.
A mountain is an area of land that rises
steeply from the land around it. A single
mountain is rare. Most mountains belong to
mountain ranges- long lines of mountains
that were formed at about the same time and
by the same process. Ranges that are close
together make up mountain belts.
Activity:
Locating Mountain Ranges
Objectives:
1. Locate the world’s major mountain ranges using
a physical map.
2. Describe the location of the world’s major
mountain ranges.
3. Explain the reason of the existence of
mountain ranges in their current location.
Procedure:
1. The teacher will post a physical map of the world and
give a copy per row
2. After that, the learners will be
provided with a blank world map and
they should be able to label it with the
names of the continents.
3. The learners will then locate the five major
mountain ranges in the physical map and label the
blank world map with the names of those
mountain ranges.
4. Once done, the learners will answer the guide
questions for the activity.
Guide Questions:
1. In what part of continents are the world’s major mountain ranges
located?
2. In relation to your answer in question 1, why is it that the
major mountain ranges are situated in those locations?
Video clip
1.What are the location of mountain ranges around the
world?
2. What type of plate boundary in which mountain ranges
originate?
3. What is the role of the movement of tectonic plates in the
formation of mountain ranges?
Key Concepts:
The earth’s lithosphere is divided into small and large tectonic plates
that are slowly and constantly moving. When large plates move,
many smaller ones also move around. As this happens, they might
drift from each other or bump together resulting to the formation of
different geologic features on earth’ crust such as mountains in plate
boundaries. Mountains are usually formed at convergent plate
boundaries where plates move toward each other. This type of
boundary results in a collision. Without the movement of tectonic
plates, the formation of mountain ranges won’t be possible as tectonic
plate movement facilitates the folding of lithospheric plates resulting
to mountain formation.
The learners must complete the table below by providing a
description and the locations of the given mountain ranges.
Mountain Range Continent where it is located Description
Himalayas
Andes
Alps
Atlas
Rocky Mountain
How the existence of mountain
ranges can help us better
understand the processes that
occur in the Earth’s interior.
Ask the following questions:
1. What is the difference between a mountain, mountain
range and mountain belt?
Answer: A mountain is an area of land that rises steeply
from the land around it. Mountain range is a group of
mountains and mountain ranges that are close to each other
makes up a mountain belt.
b. What are the five major mountain ranges in the
world?
Answer: Himalayas, Andes, Alps, Atlas, and
Rocky Mountain.
c. Where are majority of the world’s mountain ranges
located?
