Lesson outcomes:
• Calculate speed, distance and time
• Understand that we often calculate average speed
Converting units
In some of the questions you might need to find out the speed/distance/time but the units are not the
same. You need to convert the units to find what you’re looking for.
For example:
A car travels 2 miles in 2 minutes. What’s the speed in mph?
We need to convert minutes into hours!
There are 60 minutes in an hour
So for our example, we will convert 2 minutes into hours by doing: 2 minutes ÷ 60 = 0.033 hours
Then speed = distance ÷ time
Speed = 2 ÷ 0.033
Speed = 60mph

1) How many meters are in 6 kilometres?
2) How many seconds are in 2 minutes?
3) How many meters are in 30 kilometres?
4) How many meters are in 1.2 kilometres?
BONUS QUESTION
5) How many seconds are in 2 hours?
Answers
1) How many meters are in 6 kilometres? 6 x 1000 = 6000m
2) How many seconds are in 2 minutes? 2 x 60 = 120s
3) How many meters are in 30 kilometres? 30 x 1000 = 30,000m
4) How many meters are in 1.2 kilometres? 1.2 x 1000 = 1200
BONUS QUESTION
5) How many seconds are in 2 hours? 2 hours = 120 minutes
120 x 60 = 7200

Mild Answers
500 x 2 = 1000 miles
200 / 10 = 20 seconds
8/1 = 8 hours
10 x 8 = 80 metres
60/15 = 4 seconds
100/50 = 2 hours
100 x 4 = 400 metres
Medium Answers
10/20 = 0.5 miles
12/60= 0.2 hours
200 x 1.5 = 300 km
1600/80= 20 hours
8 x 2 = 16 metres
200 x 0.25 = 50 hours
12 x 24 = 288 metres
Hot Answers
50/5 = 10 seconds
(30 x 0.5)+(70 x 2)= 155 miles
50miles/25= 2 hours
(40/20)+(50/5)= 12 hours
20/0.5 = 10 minutes
(400 x 5) / 400 = 5 laps
(42,000/5) /60 = 140 hours
Extra practice
Remember to convert hours into seconds, and meters into kilometres
