BACKGROUND TO THE INCIDENT


• Occurred in New Zealand on the 15th of
March 2019, making it the most recent
terrorist attack.
• The main perpetrator live streamed on
Facebook during the attack for over
17mins before it was removed
• Two mass shootings occurred; at Al Noor
Mosque & Linwood Islamic Centre
• Overall killed 50, and injured 40 people
• Brenton Tarrant was the only planner and
perpetrator of the attack
• The attacker’s childhood and extremist
white supremacy views were the main
cause of the terrorist attack
KEY PARTICIPANT
• Brenton Tarrant grew up in Grafton,
NSW and experienced a traumatic
childhood
• After the death of his father, Tarrant
became active on white-nationalist
message boards and was obsessed
with terrorist attacks executed by
Islamic extremists
• Evidence found of his preparation
suggested he was planning an attack
on Eid al-Adha, the Muslim festival
as well
• Had been planning his attack since
February 2018
