THE MIDPOINT AND
DISTANCE ON A
COORDINATE
PLANE
Prepared by: Lester John Estolonio
LEARNING OUTCOMES:
LEARNING OUTCOMES:

Determine the coordinates of the

point/midpoint of a line segment on a
coordinate plane using midpoint formula
and distance formula.
LEARNING OUTCOMES:

Find the distance and midpoint between

a pair of points on the coordinate plane.
LEARNING OUTCOMES:

Appreciate how distance formula and

midpoint formula facilitates finding solutions
to real-life problems.
What if?
A plane flying between two cities cannot stop mid-air
to ascertain its position. If you are the pilot and the plane
gets some engine damage, will you go back or head on to
the final destination? What factor would you consider in
making a decision?
THINK ABOUT ME!

Maria wants to plant a tree M between the points A(3,

2) and B(7, 8) such that the tree will be exactly halfway to
the two trees at A and B. If possible, she would also like to
know the distance between the trees A and B.

Your task would be:

1. Help Maria plant tree M in the appropriate location.
2. Determine the distance between trees A and B.
How would you help Maria get the coordinates?

MIDPOINT (M)
How would you help Maria get the coordinates?
MIDPOINT (M)
The midpoint of a segment is the point on a
segment that is of the same distance from both
endpoints of the segment. As per its name, it is
equidistant from the endpoints of the segment.
To get the midpoint, remember that the x-
coordinate of M is the average of the x-coordinates of
the given line segment while the y-coordinate of M is
the average of the y-coordinate of the sample line
segment.

MIDPOINT FORMULA
Going back, let’s analyze the given.
Tree is to be planted by Maria between the trees A(3, 2) and B(7, 8).

Solution:
𝑥 1 + 𝑥 2 𝑦 1+ 𝑦 2
𝑀 ( 𝑥 , 𝑦 )=( , )
2 2

Hence, Maria should plant tree M at (5, 5).

What is the distance from point A
to B?
What is the distance from point A to B?

Remember that in order to find the distance

between points, add the square of the difference
of the abscissas to the square of the difference
of the ordinates and take the positive square
root of the sum.
Distance Formula

𝑑=√ ( 𝑥 2 − 𝑥 1 ) +( 𝑦 2 − 𝑦 1 )
2 2
𝑑=√ ( 𝑥 2 − 𝑥 1 ) +( 𝑦 2 − 𝑦 1 )
2 2

Abscissas Ordinates
Based on the problem, we have A (3,2) and B (7,8). By
simple substitution, we get:

𝑑=√ ( 𝑥 2 − 𝑥 1 ) +( 𝑦 2 − 𝑦 1 )
2 2
Hence, the distance between tree A(3,2) and tree B(7,8) is
2√13 units.
Example 1

Find the midpoint given A(5, 11) and T(-8, 4).

Solution:
𝑥 1 + 𝑥 2 𝑦 1+ 𝑦 2
𝑀 ( 𝑥 , 𝑦 ) =( , )
2 2
Example 2:

What is the distance between the points L(12, 11) and T(9, 15).

Solution:
𝑑=√ ( 𝑥 2 − 𝑥 1 ) +( 𝑦 2 − 𝑦 1 )
2 2
EXAMPLE 3

Suppose that point C in the line segment CD have the

coordinates of (3, 6). Further, suppose that the segment has a
midpoint M with coordinates of (4, 5). What are the
coordinates of the other endpoint? What is the distance
between C and D?
Given: For line segment CD with midpoint M, C(3,6),
M(4, 5) and D(.
Solution: 𝑥 1 + 𝑥 2 𝑦 1+ 𝑦 2
𝑀 ( 𝑥 , 𝑦 ) =( , )
2 2
𝑑=√ ( 𝑥 2 − 𝑥 1 ) +( 𝑦 2 − 𝑦 1 )

Exercise 1:
Given the illustration,
name the coordinates of
the line segment BC and
identify the midpoint and
the distance between the
two points.

Exercise 2:
Sheena and her friend Ryan, decided to
participate in a blood donation drive organized by
their local government of General Santos City.
They decided to meet each other at a point
halfway between their houses with coordinates (-
14, 60) and (2, 100) respectively. Should they
meet in the park represented by the coordinates (-
8, 70)? Or the coffee shop represented by the
coordinates (-6, 80)? Justify your answer.
Given: S(-14, 60) & R(2, 100)
Exercise 3:
Strike knows that the distance between two points is 4.
If one of the points has coordinates (3, 0) and the x-
coordinate of the second point is 0, what is the y-coordinate of

between Jose and the mountain, what coordinates
should represent the nipa hut’s location? What is the
