PART 1: WHAT IS ORGANIZATIONAL
BEHAVIOR?

3
DEFINITION
• Organizational behavior (OB) is the academic study of how people interact within
groups. The principles of the study of organizational behavior are applied primarily to
make businesses operate more effectively. Additionally, the study includes research
dedicated to improving job performance, increasing job satisfaction, promoting
innovation, and encouraging leadership and is a foundation of corporate human
resources. It is embedded in human resources such as employee retention, engagement,
training, and culture. -Carol Kopp (2023).

• It is largely used within the field of business management as a means to understand–

and more effectively manage–groups of people. The reason businesses look to OB is
because it can help organizations increase employee performance, while also creating a
positive working environment. -Chauncey Crail (2023)

4
DEFINITION
• OB simply refers to the way people behave in organizations and the relationship
between human behaviors and organizational settings. -Jason Gordon (2023)

ORGANIZATIONAL BEHAVIOR VS. ORGANIZATIONAL CULTURE

Organizational culture refers to qualities of the workplace itself that influence its
employees, whereas organizational behavior refers to the resulting behavior of the people
within it.

• Increased innovation
• Increased productivity and performance
• Increased trust between employees and the company/management

4 ELEMENTS OF ORGANIZATIONAL BEHAVIOR
1. People. Everyone brings their personality, values, and communication style to a
workplace environment. The interaction of employees with work and with one
another is perhaps the most important element in a work environment.
2. Structure. Refers to the relationships and roles of employees to one another and
within the company. Includes elements such as hierarchies, job descriptions,
departmentation, and compensation systems.
3. Technology: The machines, tools, and resources provided to employees to perform
their job duties, work with customers, and otherwise function within a role and as a
part of the organization.
4. External environments: Both internal and external environments are included. This
refers both to physical environments (lighting, space, furniture, etc.) and broader
conditions (economy, customers, politics, etc.)

PART 2: WORK PLACE DIVERSITY

9
DEFINITION
• Diversity in the workplace means employing people of different ages, genders,
ethnicities, sexual orientations, cultural backgrounds, and education levels. -Ashley
Stahl (2021)

• Workplace diversity means respecting and valuing the skills and differences that each
staff member brings into the workspace. A diverse workplace is an inclusive
environment that provides equal rights and opportunities for all workers, regardless of
gender, colour, age, ethnicity, physical ability, sexual orientation, religious beliefs, and
so on.

10
DEFINITION
• Diversity in the workplace is defined as a trait of company culture wherein the
workforce composition includes employees of different genders, ages, sexual
orientations, religions, languages, abilities, professional backgrounds, socioeconomic
