Introduction
Audio visual aids are those devices
which are used in classrooms to
encourage teaching learning process
and make it easier and interesting.
Audio -visual aids are the best tool for
making teaching more effective and
the best dissemination of knowledge .
Usable aids in history teaching
There are several audio visual aids which can be used in the teaching of history,
such as :
 Radio
 Television
 Computer
 Epidiascope
 Overhead projector
 Slide projector etc.
Radio
Radio is an important audio equipment
that can be used to supplement classroom
instructions. A radio broadcast covers a
large area from isolated rural places to
big cities.
It is cheaper than most teaching aids.
And only one set can prove useful to the
whole class.
Students can listen to the programmes
while doing other activities.
 In history teaching, radio can provide authoritative talks by experts on
historical topics, suitable for pupils of the 15 to 18 year old group.
 It can offer to small children quite admirable dramatizations of historical
subjects based on the well directed research and made vivid by the use of
background noises and effects.
Television
Television caters to the different learning
styles of students, by offering a unique
combination of sight, sound, motion and
emotion, which can give students a greater
understanding of the world around them.
Teachers can show tv shows and films about
historical events, great warriors and freedom
fighters and tell the students that they will be
asked questions related to it. The students
will certainly pay attention to the film and
remember what they learned from it for a
long time.
Computer
Computers are an important aid in history
teaching. Using computer in the primary and
secondary school history classrooms may help
increase the interest of students in history.
Lots of books can be found online on a computer.
There are several websites which have detailed
information about ancient events, take wikipedia
for example.
Sudents can read articles about historical events
and also see original pictures of early period,
which will make history an interesting subject for
them.
Epidiascope
The epidiascope is also known as opaque
projector. The basic functionality of the
epidiascope involves harnessing the power
of light to create the images.
The light would be directed
downward onto an object, presenting the
object on the screen in front of the class.
History teachers can use this machine
to present pictures, maps, diagrams, coins
etc. in front of the entire class.
Overheard Projector
An overhead projector is a very basic
but reliable tool used to display images
onto a screen or wall.
It consists of a large box containing a
cooling fan and an extremely bright light,
with a long arm extended above it. At the
end of the arm is a mirror that catches and
redirects the light towards the screen.
 This type of projector can be used to enlarge images onto the screen or
wall for audiences to view.
 Teaching materials can be pre-printed on plastic sheets, upon which the
educator can directly write.
 In history teaching, teachers can prepare, diagrams, maps, pictures
which are difficult to draw on blackboard, beforehand and present it
through OHP in the classroom, to save their time and efforts.
Slide Projector
A slide projector is a device that is used
to view photographic slides by using
optical and mechanical methods.
How to use a Slide Projector :-
Gather the slides you are going to
use. Place each slide into the carousel
one by one.
Press the power button or the switch
which is located somewhere along the
top.
 Focus the first slide.
 Move through the slides using the advance and reverse buttons. Pressing the
advance button will make the projector progress to the next slide. Pressing
the reverse button will make the projector backup to the previous slide.
 Press the power button when you are finished.
 To teach history through slide projectors; diagrams, maps and other
learning materials can be displayed for the entire class to view at once.
Conclusion
It is clear that audio visual aids are important tools for teaching
learning process. Even difficult history lessons can be easy and
interesting if taught by audio visual aids. It helps the teacher to
present the lesson more effectively and students learn and retain the
concepts better and for longer duration. Use of audio visual aids
improves student's critical and analytical thinking.
