Balance
Kahema, S
Objectives
 Define Analytical Balance
 List of materials required in user PPM for Analytical
Balance
 Explain the PPM for Analytical Balance
 Demonstrate PPM for an Analytical Balance
 Report for PPM performed in Analytical Balance
Analytical/weighing Balance

• A weighing scale or balance is equipment which is

used to measure the weights of chemicals needed for
the preparation of laboratory reagents.

Materials required in user PPM for
Analytical Balance
• Soft Cloth
• Camel hair brush
• Protective gloves
• Lab coat
• Distilled water
• Protective eyewear
SOP for PPM in Analytical Balance (1)
• The balance is an instrument of high precision.
• For this reason, the operator is only responsible for minimal
maintenance limited to the following…
SOP for PPM in Analytical Balance (2)
• Daily Maintenance
• Clean the weighing plate so that it is kept free of dust.
• Cleaning is done by using a piece of clean cloth which may be soaked with
distilled water.
• If there is a stain, a mild detergent can be applied.
• A paintbrush can be used to remove particles or dust deposited on the
weight plate.
• Clean the weighing chamber, externally and internally
• Verify that the glass is free from dust.
SOP for PPM in Analytical Balance (3)
• Verify that the adjustment mechanisms on the front door of
the weighing chamber works adequately
• Always use a clean, pre-weighed container for weighing
(glass container or weighing paper if possible).
• Any spill must be cleaned immediately to avoid corrosion or
contamination.
• Use 70% ethanol to disinfect the pan of the balance
SOP for PPM in Analytical Balance (4)
•Very important: Never lubricate a balance unless the
manufacturer has indicated it.
 Periodic Calibration
• Periodically verify calibration by placing an accurate
weight on the balance.
• If calibration is required contact service engineer or
technician for calibration.
