Gender Inequality in

The Legal System

Despite all the work being done to promote equality in the

Gender workplace, on the sporting ground, and at learning institutions,


inequality still exists in our society, particularly in our law and
legal system. Today, we shall be exposing this dark underbelly

– Women make up more than 50% of our lawyers,
barristers and Judges in our legal system, and comprise
more than 60% of law students and graduates. Similarly,
62% of senior associates are also female. According to
statistics provided by the United States Department of
Justice, men comprise 80.4% of the people arrested for
violent crimes, with more than 62% of those people
arrested for property crimes, though these statistics may
be blurred or warped. From the Sentencing Advisory
Council, “women are less likely to receive a sentence of
imprisonment [than men]”
