HOUSING

REQUIREMENTS FOR
HALAL PRODUCTION
INTRODUCTION
Halal production encompasses not only the slaughter process
but also the entire life cycle of an animal, including its living
conditions. These conditions play a crucial role in ensuring the
well-being of the animal, which is a highest concern in halal
principles. So establishments that produce halal meat and other
goods generated from animals have to comply to certain
housing requirements.

• Promote animal welfare: Provide a humane and stress-free environment that
respects the animal's natural behavior and needs.

• Maintain cleanliness and hygiene: Minimize risks of contamination and

ensure a healthy environment for both animals and workers.

• Support efficient production: Create a conducive space for optimal growth

and productivity of the animals.

• Comply with religious guidance: Adhere to Islamic teachings regarding

animal treatment and respect for life.

1. Location Selection:
• Choose a location away from sources of pollution, industrial waste, and other
nuisances that could contaminate the production area.
• Consider the environmental impact and proximity to potential sources of
impurity, such as sewage treatment plants or waste disposal sites.

2. Air Quality and Ventilation

• Implement proper ventilation systems to ensure a continuous supply of fresh air and
prevent the buildup of pollutants within the facility.
• Adequate air filtration systems should be in place to eliminate airborne
contaminants that may compromise the halal status of products.

3. Waste Management:

Develop a robust waste management system to handle both organic and non-
organic waste.
Ensure that waste disposal practices adhere to environmental regulations and do
not pose a risk of contamination to the production area.

4. Building Design:

Construct facilities with designs that prioritize cleanliness and hygiene.

Use materials that are easy to clean and sanitize, reducing the risk of
contamination in the production process.

5. Pest Control:

Implement effective pest control measures to prevent the presence of pests that
could compromise the halal status of the products.
Employ methods that are in accordance with Islamic teachings and do not
involve the use of harmful substances.

6. Water Quality:

Ensure a clean and safe water supply for all production processes.
Regularly test and monitor water quality to prevent contamination that could
impact the halal status of products.

7. Surrounding Environment:

Consider the broader environmental context when selecting the production site.
Take steps to mitigate the impact of external factors, such as nearby
construction or industrial activities, that could introduce pollutants into the
production environment.

8. Compliance with Regulations:

Familiarize yourself with local and international regulations related to halal

production and environmental standards.
Ensure that the facility operates in full compliance with these regulations to
maintain the halal integrity of the products.

animals feel
comfortable

Poultry:

Housing: Go for cages that have lots of natural

light and good ventilation. For the building, think
about utilizing bamboo or repurposed wood, which
will ensure adequate ventilation and insulation.
Skylights are another option if you want more natural
light.

Flooring: Use a combination of
durable, easy-to-clean concrete
floors with sections covered in
wood chips or straw for
scratching and dust bathing.
Provide perches made from
natural branches or bamboo for
roosting and exercise.

Perches:
Enrichment: Hang toys like
wind chimes or pecking
blocks to stimulate natural
foraging behavior and reduce
boredom. Offer dust baths
filled with sand or ash for
feather maintenance.

Cattle:

Housing: Build spacious shelters

with open areas for grazing and
closed areas for resting and
shade. Use natural materials like
wood or bamboo for the frame,
with thatched roofs for insulation
and natural ventilation.

Flooring: Go for a
combination of concrete in
high-traffic areas for easy
cleaning and soft bedding
like straw in resting areas for
comfort. Consider providing
access to grazing pastures
with a variety of grasses and
other vegetation.

Enrichment: Create mud
wallows for cooling and
socializing. Offer mineral
licks to supplement their diet
and provide climbing
structures like hills or mounds
for exercise and stimulation.

Housing: Similar to cattle, spacious
shelters with open and closed areas
are ideal. Use sturdy materials like
stone or brick for the foundation and
walls, with a sloping roof for proper
drainage. Consider incorporating hay
feeders and automatic waterers for
ease of access.

Flooring: Provide a mix of
concrete floors in high-traffic
areas and sloped gravel or
compacted earth in resting
areas. Rough terrain with
rocks and logs can mimic
their natural habitat and
encourage climbing.

Enrichment: Offer climbing
structures like rocks or wooden
platforms. Create browse lines
with branches and shrubs for
foraging and browsing behavior.
Hang salt licks and mineral
blocks for dietary needs.
