OVERVIEW OF

ENVIRONMENTAL
SCIENCE
OBJECTIVES:
1. Define Environmental Science
2. Explain the Nature of Environmental Science
3. Enumerate the scope of Environmental
Science.
4. Discuss the importance of Environmental
Science
List down 5 living things and
non-living things around you. Be
able to support your answer.
Environment: The total of our surroundings
All the things around us with which we
interact:

Living things
o Animals, plants, microorganisms
Non-living things
o Continents, oceans, clouds, soil, rocks
Ou built environment
o Buildings
Social relationship and institutions
Lets have a field trip!!!

What is Environmental
Science?
Environmental science is the study of
multitude interactions between humans
and the world around them, living and
non living things.

Environmental science is the study of

how the world works and how the
environment affects humans and vice
versa.
is a study that helps us understand and solve environmental problems
INTERRELATIONSHIPS IN
ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE

A community decides to use coal for electricity as it is the

cheapest source available.(Economics)

The coal must be mined from under the soil (Geology)

The coal must be transported to the population center by

road or rail. (Engineering)
INTERRELATIONSHIPS IN
ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE

When it is burned at a power plant, air pollution is released.

Some of that pollution is converted to acid in the
atmosphere.(Chemistry)
This falls as acid rain somewhere downward.
(Meteorology)

The acid stresses plants by affecting their nutrient

absorption. (Ecology)
Laws are passed requiring the plant to install pollution
scrubbers.(Politics)

Unjumbled or re arranged the letters to

identify the multi disciplinary nature of science

COMPONENTS OF
ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE

Atmospheric science is a broad field that deals

with the study of the atmosphere, its processes,
the effects of other systems on the atmosphere and
vice versa.

It covers other fields such as meteorology,

climatology and aeronomy.

Ecology is a scientific study of the relationship

between organisms and their environment.

This involves the diversity, distribution, amount

(biomass), number (population) of organisms as
well as competition between them and among
ecosystems.

ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE

Environmental Chemistry is a scientific discipline

focused on the chemical changes in the
environment.
The principal areas covered in the study are the
soil contamination and water pollution. Topics
include chemical degradation in the environment,
multi-phase transport of and chemical effects in
the environment.

Geosciences is a scientific study on the Earth’s
crust that includes environmental geology,
environmental soil science and volcanic
phenomena

It also covers classifications such as hydrology and

oceanography.
COMPONENTS OF
ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE
Ethics is a branch of philosophy that is derived
from the logical application of human values. It
distinguishes between right or wrong.

These values are the principles that an individual or

a society considers important or worthwhile. It
determines whether a conduct is morally
acceptable or unacceptable
COMPONENTS OF
ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE
Environmental Ethics is a field of applied ethics
that considers the moral basis of environmental
responsibility.

It includes human as part of the natural community

rather than managers of it. Such ethics places
limits on human activities that may adversely
affect the natural community.
