Simple

Machines
A lever is a simple
machine made of a
rigid bar that is free
to turn about a fixed
point.
What
are
the
parts
• The effort (input
force) and load or
resistance (output
force) are applied to
either end of the beam
.
• The fulcrum is the
point on which the
bar pivots.
• When an effort is
applied to one end
of the lever, a load is
applied at the other
end of the lever.
What are the
classes of lever?
resistance or
resistance or resistance or

1. Where is the fulcrum in class 1

lever?
2. Look at the class 1 lever, where
is the fulcrum found?
3. Where is the fulcrum found in
class 2 lever?
4. Where do you find the fulcrum
in class 1 lever?
5. Make a code in order to
remember the differences of the
classes of levers.
First class lever ______ second class lever: _______
third class lever: _______
Group
Activity
1. Form groups.
2. Use any tool to demonstrate a lever.
3. Identify the parts of the lever.
4. Classify the lever from class 1, 2, and 3.
5. Present this in the class.
Activity: Classify me:
Study the tools and
write if class 1, class 2
and class 3 lever.

How does lever acts on the load as you use it?

The lever multiplies the effort force, creating a

larger output force that acts on the load. The
multiplied amount of force depends on the
distances of the point of effort and the load from
the fulcrum.
Quiz Time..
Choose the letter of the correct answer.
1. The wheelbarrow is a _________
class lever because the ________is
in the middle of the two other
important points.
a) 1st ; fulcrum
b) 2nd; load
c) 3rd; effort
d) 2nd; effort
2. Will it be possible for a girl in a
seesaw to balance herself with her
father who weighs twice as much as
her ?Why?
a) Yes. She’ll have to sit nearer the fulcrum than her
father.

b) Yes. Her father will have to sit nearer the fulcrum than

her.

c) No. She needs to be as heavy as her father.

3. A can opener is a combination of
simple machine?
a) a lever and a wedge
b) a wedge and screw
c) a lever and an inclined plane
d) an inclined plane and a wedge
4. How much force is needed in
going up less steep incline?
a) less; longer
b) less; shorter
c) more; shorter
d) more;longer
5. Why is it more important slippery spots
on ramps than a level pavement?
a) Just hold on the handrails and you’ll be
alright.
b) Slipping on the ramp will hurt more
than slipping on a level pavement.
c) No such slippery spots on ramps because
water runs down, while it forms puddles
on a level pavement.
d) You’ll need friction to stand upright on a
ramp, while on a level pavement you can
stand even if it is slippery.
