TITLE
THE EFFECTS OF LACK OF SLEEP
TO THE ACADEMIC
PERFORMANCE OF HUMANITIES
AND SOCIAL SCIENCES
STUDENTS
OVERVIEW
Sleep is essential for maintaining excellent health and wellbeing throughout your life, according to the National Heart, Lung, and Blood
Institute (2022). A person's feelings during the day are partially influenced by their experiences during sleep. Your body is preserving your
physical well-being and promoting good brain function while you sleep. Furthermore, sleep is said to enhance growth and development in
kids and teenagers. Chronic (long-term) health issues can become more likely to occur if you don't get enough sleep. Additionally, it may have
an impact on your ability to think, behave, learn, and get along with other people.

The consequences of sleep deprivation on HUMSS students' academic performance are the primary focus of this study. The researcher is keen
on figuring out and documenting how respondents' academic performance is affected by inadequate sleep. Everyone would have their eyes
widened by this study. For some students, it could also be beneficial to modify the present school year's schedule. All things taken into
account, not just HUMSS students, would benefit from this study. Furthermore, this would encourage the students to consider and modify
their sleep schedules.
STATEMENT OF THE
PROBLEM
1. What is the demographic profile of the senior high school students in BINHS;
1.1 Age
1.2 Gender
1.3 Grade Level
1.4 Average hours of sleep per day
2. What is the effect of lack of sleep towards the respondents?
3. What is the level of academic performance of the respondents?
4. Is there a significant relationship between lack of sleep and academic performance of the
respondents?
SYNTHESIS
Synthesis of Literature
The harmful consequences of sleep deprivation on academic performance and cognitive function have been demonstrated by an array of
literature. According to Jalali et al. (2020), students who have irregular sleep patterns are more likely to experience extreme tiredness and an
extended risk of academic failure that lasts for more than a year. According to Okano et al. (2019), sleep plays a critical role in memory
consolidation, and sleep deprivation has a negative impact on attention, cognition, and general cognitive function outside of the lab. The effects
of sleep deprivation on learning, concentration, decision-making, problem-solving, and emotional regulation were further emphasized by the
National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (2022). They suggested that getting too little sleep can result in slower reaction times, longer task
completion times, and more mistakes.

Jorge II et al. (2020) reaffirmed the critical link between sleep and learning, pointing out that because sleep deprivation increases vulnerability
to learning impairment, inadequate sleep is significantly associated with poor academic performance. Toyong (2020) brought attention to the
possible risks associated with sleep deprivation, highlighting its deleterious effects on scholastic achievement. One significant problem that has
been found to influence kids' learning capacities and general success is sleepiness in the classroom. Despite being aware of the potential
repercussions, pupils at Silliman University Senior High School were found to be partially sleep deprived in the Sygaco (2021) study. It's
interesting to note that the absence of an association between sleep and the overall average implies that kids would be able to withstand losing
some sleep-in order to meet academic objectives, demonstrating a degree of acclimatization to the school's curriculum and sleep deprivation.
With everything considered, the findings emphasize how critical it is to address sleep-related issues in order to support students' academic
success and general well-being.
SYNTHESIS
Synthesis of Studies
Numerous research projects provide a thorough understanding of how sleep affects academic achievement.
Embang (2021), used statistical methods such as correlation and the T-test to examine sleep deprivation among
graduates of the University of Science and Technology of Southern Philippines: a questionnaire. The results
highlighted the significance for HUMSS students, showing that higher sleep duration was associated with better
performance in Eng 111 and Educ 90. For improved learning and academic achievement, healthy sleeping habits
were emphasized. Sygaco (2021), emphasized the importance of sleep-in maintaining life balance and reviving
energy. Sleep disruption can impair cognitive performance and health by causing weariness and fatigue. In order to
prevent sleep debt, Sygaco recommended eight to ten hours of sleep and emphasized time management, a
comfortable sleeping environment, and a reduction in social media use.
Tus (2022) examined the pandemic's effects on freshmen's sleep quality and found notable social media effects.
Social media used before bedtime was found to have a significant positive connection (R-value: 2.83) with sleep
quality. The study underlined how important it is to address how social media affects the quality of sleep that first-
year college students get.
SYNTHESIS
Synthesis of Studies
Jalali et al. (2020) established an unbreakable link between sleep and mental wellness, learning, and human health. Lack of
sleep, sleep for brief periods of time, and irregular sleep patterns have all been linked to poorer academic performance and
learning capacity. Individuals who had enough sleep demonstrated twice as much creative problem-solving. Procedural errors
have been associated with sleep deprivation, which also has a detrimental impact on the nervous system, declines in cognitive
function, and lowers academic performance.
Guadiana & Okashima (2020) reaffirmed how sleep deprivation impairs brain function and increases procedural errors by
negatively affecting the neurological system. Academic performance was negatively impacted by the cognitive deterioration
brought on by sleep deprivation.
According to Lin (2022), students who sacrifice sleep to meet academic obligations experience unfavorable effects on their
brain function and academic performance. Stress, fatigue, and irritability increased as a result of little sleep. Better performance
in class was connected with getting enough sleep.
All of these research point to the importance of getting enough good sleep for enhancing learning, cognitive abilities, and
general academic achievement. They emphasize how important it is to deal with sleep-related problems and put healthy sleep
habits into place in order to improve kids' academic performance and general well-being.
