writing that aims to either inform the
reader about a topic or argue a particular
perspective.

The argumentative essay is a genre of writing that requires the student to


investigate a topic, collect, generate, and evaluate evidence, and
establish a position on the topic in a concise manner. Argumentative
essay assignments generally call for extensive research of literature or
previously published material.

ISSUE

Define the topic or problem you're addressing in your


argumentative essay.
CLAIM

Clearly state your main argument or thesis. This should be a


concise and specific statement.
ARGUMENT

Present the supporting points or reasons that back up your claim.


Each point should be well-reasoned and supported by evidence.
EVIDENCE

Provide examples, statistics, or expert quotes that support each


argument you've presented. Make sure the evidence is relevant
and reliable.
COUNTERARGUMENT

Address potential opposing views or counterarguments related to


your claim. Acknowledge the existence of alternative
perspectives.
REBUTTAL

Offer counterarguments to the counterarguments. Explain why


your position is stronger, providing additional evidence or
demonstrating flaws in opposing viewpoints.
PROS

Highlight the positive aspects or benefits associated with your


argument. Explain why your position is favorable.
CONS

Discuss potential drawbacks, criticisms, or challenges related to


your argument. Acknowledge the complexities of the issue.
