CHAPTER 1
INTRODUCTION
BACKGROUND

Language is a system of sound symbols used only by humans to communicate with

other people. Literally, language is defined as a means used by only humans to interact with
other creatures. Language has indeed become one of the tools used by everyone from various
parts of the world to be able to convey their ideas to others. According to Chaer (2003), language
is a verbal tool for communication (p. 30). It means that language is the exchange of messages
or information between two or more people. Language is strongly embedded in one’s personality.
In language, we recognize not only the sounds produced by mouth but also the language
rendered by gestures or body language.
English is one of the most famous international languages in the world. The
development of English is quickly widespread in all fields, such as education, information,
technology, and international trade. According to Rayner (2003), English is the international
language, making it the most widely spoken language in the world (p. 25). In other words,
English influences the world so large that can pass over all aspects of life. This makes
learning to communicate in English not too difficult. The process of communication in English
is available to people from different countries who speak different languages.

In a debate, you present a controversial point of view about a topic just
as you do in a persuasive speech (p.205). On the other hand, using
debate can make students the art of organizing and articulating ideas

Review of Previous Studies

1. The research by Hermawan (2018) entitled “The Use of Debate

Technique in Increasing Students’ Speaking Ability at Eleventh
Grade of SMA Negeri 1 Palangga in the Academic Year of
2018/2019”. In this research, the subjects were 40 students of the
given class. The problems found were the method that the teacher
used was not interesting, the lack of vocabulary to express that
idea, and students feeling unconfident or afraid because for them in
their mind English is a difficult lesson.
2. The research by Fitriani (2019) entitled “Improving Students’
Speaking Skill Through Debate Technique” (An Action Research
at Grade X of Mas Amaliyah Sunggal). The problems in this
research are a lack of understanding of English, a lack of
vocabulary so they are not confident, a lack of support from the
environment especially from schools to always speak English in
a language class English, and a lack of learning media and
monotonous learning strategies. This research aimed to
implement the Debate Technique to improve students’
achievement in speaking skills.
3. The research by Rubiati (2010, p. 43) entitled “Improving
students’ speaking skill through debate technique.” The
problems in this research are the students’ difficulties that occur
when they speak English. This is caused by students’ limitations
in mastering the component of speaking. Besides, students
rarely practice speaking in English. They only have a little
chance to practice speaking English outside of class because
most of their friends speak Indonesian.
