Ports
Types of ports:
• Serial ports
• Parallel ports
• USB ports
• Fire wire ports
• Thunderbolt ports
• HDMI ports
• eSATA ports
• Ethernet ports
Ports

• A port is an interface or connection point through which peripheral device

connected to computer. A peripheral device is a component such as monitor or
keyboard that connect to the computer .The speed can be measured in kilobits per
second megabits per second or gigabits per second.
• There are different types of ports.
1.Serial ports

• The serial port is an interface or connection that allows transmission of one bit at
time.
• It has 9 or 25 pins and has slower data transfer rate.
• The speed of serial port is 115kps.
• Serial ports were also known as COM1,COM2,and COM3.
• Serial port has also been replaced by USB ports.
2.Parallel ports

• The parallel port is an interface or connection that allows the transmission of multiple bits
at a time.
• Parallel ports have 25 pins and 8 of these pins are used to carry 1 byte of data.
• The speed of parallel port is 12 Mbps.
• Parallel ports were also known as LPT1,LPT2 and LPT3 ports.
• Parallel ports have been replaced by USB ports.
3.USB ports

• USB port is the most common type of port that is used to connect devices such as
keyboard, mouse, scanner , digital camera, printers ,external hard disk and USB flash
drives etc.
• It can connect up to 127 different peripheral device with a single connector type.
• USB ports hot swapping and plug-and –play.[PnP].
• Hot Swapping is the ability to connect and disconnect device without shutting down the
computer.
• Plug-and-Play enables computer to automatically detect and configure a device when it
connect to the computer.
4.FireWire port

• FireWire is also known as IEEE 1394.It was originally released by Apple in 1995.
• It supports hot-swapping and can connect up to 63 devices per port.
• The original FireWire 400 has a data transfer rate of 400 Mbps.
• The current standard FireWire 800 provides a speed 800 Mbps .
5.Thunderbolt ports

• It is an interconnect technology developed by intel.it is a fastest type of port used to

connect devices to a computer.
• It supports a transfer of speed of up to 40Gbps.
• It can also be used to connect USB and FireWire peripheral using proper adopter.
• Apple was the first company that used this port on its computer .
6.HDMI Port

• HDMI stands for High-Definition Multimedia Interface.

• HDMI port provides audio/video interface for transmitting audio and video data.
• the computers ,digital cameras, TV, game consoles, and other media devices have at least
one HDMI port.
• It transmit high quality audio-video data in digital form through a single cable.
7.e SATA port

• It is stands for external serial Advanced Technology Attachment.

• An eSATA port is used to connect an external SATA hard disk to a computer .
• SATA hard disks are popular because of their fast data transmission speeds.
• eSATA connections provide up to six times faster data transmission speed can external
hard disk attached to USB or FireWire port.
8.Ethernet port

• Ethernet port is used to connect a computer to local network or cable modem.

• Ethernet originally offered a transfer rate of 10 Mbps.
• Fast Ethernet [called 100Base-T] provide a transfer rate of 100 Mbps.
• Gigabit Ethernet provides a higher speed of transmission with transfer rate of 1 Gbps. 8
9.Audio port

• Audio port is used to connect headphones ,microphone and speaker to a computer .
