USE OF ADVERBS

Examples and Exercise


Adverbs

◦ Adverbs play a crucial role in a sentence, they add additional information to a sentence to make it
clearer and convey how an action was performed:

◦ 1. Modifying verbs: how, when, where, to what extent etc.


◦ 2. Modifying adjective to intensify the meaning.
◦ 3. Modifying other adverbs to clarify the degree.
◦ 4. Modify entire clause of a sentence.
◦ 5. Expressing the time, place and manner.
◦ 6. Expressing the degree.
Read the following sentences twice; incorporate the
given time adverbs to replace the one in brackets.
◦ 1. He (often) cooks his breakfast: a) yesterday; b) every morning since his wife left
home.
◦ A. He cooked his breakfast yesterday.
◦ B. He has cooked his breakfast every morning since his wife left home.
◦ 2. We are living in the country (now): a) until the war; b) since the war.
◦ 3. The fat lady next door (frequently) practices singing: a) for three hours yesterday;
b) everyday since we came to live here.
◦ 4. He was preparing for the examination (last month) : a) now; b) for the last
fortnight.
◦ 5. Who are you laughing at (now)? : a) Just now; b) all this time.
