Introduction Nondisjunction in Nondisjunction in
meiosis I meiosis II
Introduction

chromatids to separate properly during cell division. This results in extra
chromosomes on gametes

Occurs during anaphase I, when Occurs during anaphase II, when sister
homologous pairs fail to separate chromatids fail to separate

(two = n + 1 ; two = n – 1) (two = n ; one = n + 1 ; one = n – 1)
Diagram
This diagram shows how nondisjunction
occurs in different stages of meiosis.
Effects of nondisjunction
0
Nondisjunction can cause pregnancy loss or birth of
a child with extra chromosomes

Down-syndrome
★ Down syndrome occurs when a child
is born with 3 chromosomes instead
of 2 in the 21st chromosome.
★ This is called Trisomy 21.
★ It is more likely that nondisjunction
occurred in the egg cell
★ Maternal age increases the chance of
down syndrome.
