OPTICAL FIBER CONNECTORS:
 Fiber connectors are Demountable.
 Connectors are used to join optical sources and detectors with optical fibers.
 Connectors are also used to join two fibers.
 The main criteria about the connectors is that the connectors should be
aligned properly in order to reduce losses.
 Vibration that may be taking place in one optical fiber should not be
transmitted to the another fiber.
BASIC REQUIREMENTS:
 Low coupling losses
 Interchangeability
 Easy to assemble
 Low environment sensitivity
 Low cost and reliable
 Ease of connection
CONNECTOR TYPES:
 There are two major types of connectors:
1. Butt-joint (Ferrule type connector)
2. Expanded-beam classes (Lensed type connector)
BUTT-JOINT CONNECTORS:
 Butt joint connector employs metal, ceramic, molded plastic ferrule.
 Here, uncoated fibers are placed in ferrule and then they are fixed by
adhesive material.

 Then two ferrule are bought to connect in cylindrical sleeve.

 Inside ferrule one hole is drilled so fiber can epoxide.
Challenges: maintaining both dimensions of hole diameter and its position
relative to the outer surface ferrules.
BUTT-JOINT CONNECTORS:
• There are basically two mechanisms in butt joint connectors:
• (a) Straight sleeve
• (b) Taperd sleeve

EXPANDED-BEAM CLASSES:

 By adjusting two lenses collimating and focus lense, one fiber is connected
with other optical fiber .

 These connectors employs lenses at the end of fiber.

 Radial alignment is not critical as compared to other connectors, here
angular alignment is critical.

 Transmitting fiber:- Collimate the light by lens.

 Receiving fiber:- focus the expanded beam on core by lens.
EXPANDED-BEAM CLASSES:
 Separation of fiber can take place as beam is collimated.
 Connector lenses depends on lateral alignment.
