Comparative
and
Superlative
Comparative
• We use the superlative of adjectives when we compare one person, animal or thing with several
of the same kind.
• Formation :
• Example
1. Correct : Noah is the eldest of the four brothers.
Incorrect: Noah is the elder of the four brothers.
2. Correct : Her third book was the most interesting.
Incorrect: Her third book was the interestingest.
To make the comparative form of
adjectives and the superlative form,
first we need to know how many
syllables are in the adjective.
If the adjective ends in 'e', we don't add another 'e', just 'r'.
• Even when the adjective has only one syllable, it's still
not wrong to use 'more' or 'most'. It's possible to say
'more wet' or 'most tall'. This isn't incorrect.
• There are a few adjectives that we have to use 'more’
or 'most' with, even though they only have one syllable.
We CAN'T add 'er' or 'est'.
