INTRODUCTION
Private automobiles are the primary mode of transportation for most city dwellers, contributing to
pollution and traffic.
The report recommended reducing car traffic and promoting public transit and bicycles using
policies such as congestion pricing, parking management, and mixed-use communities.
Sustainable transportation laws and initiatives, such as integrated land use and transportation
planning, can help solve transportation problems in Beirut by increasing accessibility, reducing
congestion, and providing economic benefits.
CASE STUDY: DOHA
Qatar has invested heavily in eco-friendly transportation options in
anticipation of the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
Beirut and Doha's case studies demonstrate the financial and environmental benefits of
establishing sustainable transportation networks.
Policymakers should consider promoting mass transportation, bicycles, and foot traffic instead of
private automobiles, implementing integrated land use and transportation planning solutions,
launching a sustainable transportation fund, and involving people in making sustainable
transportation plans.
By following these guidelines, Arab cities can provide safer, more sustainable, and more efficient
transportation while reducing CO2 emissions, improving access, reducing congestion, and
reaping economic benefits.
