INTRODUCTION

 The transportation industry is facing global challenges to make green and

safe transportation modes available to city dwellers.
 The sustainability of a transportation network is evaluated using
monetary, ecological, and social metrics.
 This presentation will focus on sustainable mobility in the Arab world
through two case studies: Beirut and Doha.
SUSTAINABLE
TRANSPORTATION IN
THE ARAB WORLD

 The expansion of cities and

population growth have strained
public utilities such as highways and
subways across the Arab world.
 Transportation is a significant
contributor to greenhouse gas
emissions in Arab countries.
 The study "Sustainable
Transportation in the Arab World:
International Benchmarking on
Sustainable Transport Policies and
Their Impacts" evaluated the policies
and outcomes of sustainable
transportation in Arab nations.
Case Study: Beirut
 Beirut, the capital of Lebanon, has transportation issues such as traffic congestion, air pollution,
and a lack of eco-friendly options.

 Private automobiles are the primary mode of transportation for most city dwellers, contributing to
pollution and traffic.

 "Economic Impacts of Adopting a Sustainable Transport System in Beirut" recommended a

sustainable transportation fund to develop eco-friendly transportation systems and services such
as improving public transit, cycling infrastructure, and shared bicycles.

 The report recommended reducing car traffic and promoting public transit and bicycles using
policies such as congestion pricing, parking management, and mixed-use communities.

 Sustainable transportation laws and initiatives, such as integrated land use and transportation
planning, can help solve transportation problems in Beirut by increasing accessibility, reducing
congestion, and providing economic benefits.
CASE STUDY: DOHA
Qatar has invested heavily in eco-friendly transportation options in
anticipation of the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

The Doha Metro, the country's eco-friendly public transportation

system, was built to transport up to 600,000 passengers daily.

Qatar has also implemented a well-developed cycling network,

pedestrian-friendly zones, and free public transportation during the
World Cup to encourage sustainable mobility.

"Sustainable Transportation and Mega Sporting Events in Arab

Countries: The Case of Qatar" recommends the government continue its
sustainable mobility strategy after the World Cup.

The study suggested restricting the number of cars on the road,

extending the metro system, and implementing integrated land use and
transportation planning to increase local connections and reduce the
need for long-distance travel.
CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATIONS

Sustainable transportation is a significant issue in several Arab cities and worldwide.

Beirut and Doha's case studies demonstrate the financial and environmental benefits of
establishing sustainable transportation networks.

Policymakers should consider promoting mass transportation, bicycles, and foot traffic instead of
private automobiles, implementing integrated land use and transportation planning solutions,
launching a sustainable transportation fund, and involving people in making sustainable
transportation plans.

By following these guidelines, Arab cities can provide safer, more sustainable, and more efficient
transportation while reducing CO2 emissions, improving access, reducing congestion, and
reaping economic benefits.
