Overview
What is atopic dermatitis

 Chronic inflammatory itchy skin condition.

 Is the most common form of eczema.

 Usually starts in infancy or early childhood.

 Considered an immune-mediated.
Causes

 The exact cause of atopic eczema is unknown ,but its clear its not down to one single thing.

 Soap
 The symptoms of atopic eczema often have certain triggers such as :  Detergents
 Stress
 weather
 Atopic eczema often occurs in people who get allergies. Atopic:
sensitivity
.allergens
 Sometime food allergies can play part especially in young children with severe eczema.

 It often develops alongside other conditions such as :  Asthma.


 Hay fever.

 Some people only have small patches of dry skin.

 With infant and toddler AD usually starts on the face and may spread to other area.

 Inflated skin can become red on lighter skin ,dark brown or purple on darker skin.

 Symptoms depend on the severity.


Treatment

 For control not for healing.


Reducing scratching.
• Self-care techniques
Avoiding triggers.

• Emollients (moisturizing treatments) Used daily for dry skin.

• Topical corticosteroids : used to reduce swelling, redness, itching during flare-ups.


School activities

 Your child may have to limit certain activities such as sports or take special precaution.

 You can suggest alternative activities to the teacher for your child that don’t involve
sweating such as music, art, writing, computer work.

 For a child with eczema interested in sports Sport reporting maybe alternative to
prevent discomfort.

 If your child scratch let the teacher know and share distraction strategies that you may feel it
will be helpful.

 Let the teacher know that applying moisturize or cool washcloth to the itchy area or drinking
glass of cold water may provide to the child some relief

 Ask the teacher to avoid telling children not to scratches.

Encourage rubbing instead so as to not damage the


skin and increase the potential for infection.
Good ideas

 Its good idea to discuss your child’s eczema diagnosis with the
teacher at the start of the school years.

To help the teacher makes your child school experience as normal as


possible and help your child to cope with any social or emotional
issues it may arise in classroom.
