Introduction
• Nursing informatics, a specialized field within healthcare, plays a
crucial role in enhancing the quality of patient care, improving
efficiency, and advancing the nursing profession. One significant area
where nursing informatics finds widespread application is in research
and education. The integration of technology into nursing practice has
revolutionized the way nurses conduct research and educate
themselves and their peers.
Introduction
• In the realm of research, nursing informatics facilitates the collection,
analysis, and interpretation of data to generate evidence-based
insights. Electronic health records (EHRs), clinical information
systems, and other digital tools streamline the research process,
enabling nurses to access a wealth of patient information quickly and
efficiently. This accelerates the pace of research, contributes to
evidence-based practice, and ultimately leads to improved patient
outcomes.
Meaning the Research in nursing
• Research in nursing refers to the systematic and rigorous investigation
of questions or issues relevant to the field of nursing. It involves the
application of scientific methods to discover new knowledge, validate
existing information, or solve practical problems within the healthcare
context.
Key aspects of research in nursing include:
• Evidence-Based Practice (EBP): Nursing research plays a vital role in
the development and validation of evidence-based practices.
• Clinical Inquiry: Nursing research involves asking relevant questions
about clinical practice, patient experiences, and healthcare outcomes.
• Professional Development: Engaging in research enhances the
professional development of nurses. It encourages critical thinking,
analytical skills, and a deeper understanding of nursing theories and
concepts.
Applications of nursing informatices in
Nursing Research
• Conduct online searches of data base: as using Google search engine
and Provides online-saved electronic journal articles, theses and
dissertations from scientific websites: e.g. CINHAL, Medline,
PubMed, Science Direct.
1-CINHAL
• (Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature).
• It indexes publications from several of the prominent nursing
associations and from many publishers. Often the articles are attached
in full text.
2- MEDLINE
• (Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System Online).
• It is a bibliographic database of life sciences and biomedical
information for articles from academic journals covering medicine,
nursing, pharmacy, dentistry, veterinary medicine, and health care.
Data analysis- statistical analysis (e.g. SPSS)
SPSS (Statistical Package for the Social Science).
• It is software platform-application offers advanced statistical analysis,
a vast library of machine learning algorithms and text analysis.
• Within the SPSS software family of products, SPSS Statistics
supports hypothesis testing approach of research data (in experimental
research designs).
4. Offers assistive application and websites in conducting
research: Team space, Blog lines, Google Notebook and
EndNote.
•• Team space: Offers the
possibility for research teams to
work together professionally and
flexible via internet. It has
carefully designed to link together
professionals within teams, who
are separated either by
organizational structures or
geographical aspects.
Blog lines:
• Enables researcher to subscribe to Web feeds that are constantly
updated. The result is that, in a single place, researcher can collect
interesting content from many Web pages and blogs.
Google Notebook:
• Allows researcher to take notes online and access them from any
computer. Researcher also can create multiple notebooks and move
notes from one notebook to another.
5. Publishing research project through

Written manuscript as journal articles, theses and dissertations

Multimedia presentation (e.g. slide share)

Podcast: Is a digital medium that consists of an episodic series of

audio, video and digital radio downloaded through web.
Applications of Nursing Informatics in
Nursing Education
• 1. Computer learning
management system (LMS).
• 2. Computerized-assisted
instruction.
• 3. Distance Learning-Web
based courses.
Computer Learning
Management System (LMS)
• Software facilitates delivering course
content electronically (i.e. blackboard
platform). A system where a computer
is used to manage several
aspects including learning assessment
through administration of pretests and
posttests; delivering the learning content;
scoring computer learning activities, and
providing printable certificates on course
completion.
Computer Assisted
instructions

• Refers to the use of the computer as a

tool to facilitate and improve instruction.
• It is a self-learning technique, usually
offline/online, involving interaction of
the student with programmed
instructional materials (e.g. learning
C.D).
Means education in which the learners are
teachers are in different locations.

Distance Asynchronous learning: learners use learning

learning-Web resources at a time and place that is
convenient to them.
based courses
Synchronous learning: class is held at set
times and all participants are present either
online or in classroom (i.e. Webinars and
online lectures).
