Curriculum Evaluation

NUR 4104

1
Curriculum Evaluation
Evaluators gather and interpret data to
determine whether to accept, change or
eliminate aspects of the C such as
particular text books.
CE is imp not only at the end of the
program but also at various points thru out
the program’s development and
implementation.

2
Purpose of Curriculum
Evaluation
Evaluation addresses the value and
effectiveness of curricular matters and
activities.
Evaluation not only assesses learning but
also promotes it.

3
Why Curriculum Evaluation?
The very concept of the program
Have worth and merit
CE focuses on whether the C is producing
desired results.
Strengths and weaknesses of the program.
How the students measure up against
other students at the local, state and
international level.
4
Areas to evaluate include:
Curriculum theory used
Written tests
Review’s of students work
Viewing students as they engage in
particular educational activities
Observing questionnaires, checklist,
inventories, interview schedules and video
performances
5
It also includes…
Data on teachers…qualifications of
teachers, observations of teacher, viewing
of video taped lessons, analysis of lesson
plans, interviews, data on formative and
summative tests conducted etc.

6
Evaluation steps
1. Focus on the curricular phenomena to
be evaluated.
Which is focus for evaluation total or part of
the school.
Evaluators spell out objectives for evaluation
and identify the constraints and policies
under which evaluation will be conducted.

7
2. Collect the information. Evaluators
identify the necessary information's
sources and the means by which they can
collect the information.
They also map out stages for collecting
the information in terms of their time
schedule

8
3. Organize the information. Evaluators
organize the information so that the
intended audience will be able to interpret
and use it. They note means of coding,
organizing, storing and retrieving the
information

9
4. Analyse the information. Evaluators
select and employ analysis techniques
appropriate to the evaluation’s focus.

10
5. Report the information. Evaluators
decide the nature of the reporting such as
giving opinions and making judgements
based on general perceptions. However,
they might decide that they should collect,
treat, and report the data more rigorously
in which case the final report would have
detailed statistical data.

11
6. Recycle the information. The need for
current information requires continuous
feedback and modifications are necessery
b’cause the forces affecting schools
always changing.

12
In reporting…
Not only report the data but also interpret
them and make recommendations for
action.
Will indicate means by which their
recommendations can be accomplished.

13
Person/s must be responsible for these
phases.
Schedules and budgets must be
determined.
Tasks assignments for people.

14
Key Players in Evaluation
Evaluation is a cooperative activity
involving teachers, administrators,
evaluators, students and parents.

15
Students
Students participation in evaluation
empowers students to manage their own
lives in socially acceptable, personally
meaningful ways.
Students should help determine which
evaluation procedures will be applied to
judge how much learning is occuring.

16
Educators are now giving students
responsibilities for creating portfolios that
contain their work as well as their
comments regarding particular curriculum
units.
How much did they like the unit?
What did they learn?
Another example: students evaluating their
teachers.
17
Teachers
Teachers evaluate the success of their
teaching and the curriculum within their
classrooms.
They work with peers in evaluating other
teacher’s teaching and student’s learning.

18
Evaluators
Corporation among all parties engaged in
curriculum development and delivery is
necessary.
This person, the evaluator should work
with the central school office, which
administers the curriculum.

19
The evaluator can be a member of the
school system
This approach is inexpensive.
The disadvantages are: may not give a
critical report on system
May have more responsibilities with
regular school work
May not have expertise like outside expert.
20
Consultants
It is wise to hire an outside consultant to
conceptualize the evaluation approach.
Some educators recommend that the
evaluator of a new program always should
be an outsider.

21
Parents and Community
members
Unquestionably, education involves
politics.
Those affected by education should be
involved in decisions about education,
including curriculum.
Parents and even community members
without children should be involved in
curriculum evaluation.
