Electronic Age (1930’s-

1980’s)
The invention of the transistor ushered in the electronic age. People
harnessed the power of transistors that led to transistor radio,
electronic circuits, and the early computers. In this age, long distance
communication became more efficient.
Examples:
 Transistor Radio (1954)
 Television (1941)
 Large Electronic Computer –ie EDSAC (1949) and UNIVAC 1 (1951)
 Mainframe Computer –ie IBM 704 (1960)
 Personal Computer –ie Hewlett –Packard 9100A (1968), Apple 1 (1976)
 OHP LCD Projector (1980)
Transistor Radio (1947)
 A Transistor radio is a radio receiver which uses transistors to amplify
the sound.
 Sounds are recorded through a microphone and turned into electrical
signals.
 The advantages of transistor radio are lower power consumption, less
waste heat and high efficiency than equivalent tubes.
Transistor Radio (1947)
Television (1941)
 The word is derived from mixed Latin and Greek roots, meaning "far
sight": Greek τῆλε "tele", far, and Latin visio-n, sight (from video,
vis- to see).
 The world’s first electronic television was created by a 21 year old
inventor named Philo Taylor Farnsworth.
 Television,
sometimes shortened to TV, is a telecommunication
medium for transmitting moving images and sounds.
 Television is a mass medium for advertising, entertainment, news, and
sports.

Large Electronic Computers ie.
EDSAC (1949) and UNIVAC 1 (1951)
 The EDSAC was known for “Electronic Daily Storage Automatic Calculator”.
 TheEDSAC is a large-scale electronic calculating machine in which ultrasonic
delay units are used for storage of orders and numbers. It is serial in operation
and works in the scale of two. Punched tape is used for input and a teleprinter for
output.
 The UNIVAC was known for Universal Automatic Computer.
 The UNIVAC was used to tabulate part of the 1950 population census and the
entire 1954 economic census.
Large Electronic Computers ie.
EDSAC (1949) and UNIVAC 1 (1951)
Mainframe Computer –ie. IBM 704
(1960)
The IBM 704 Data Processing System was a large-scale
computer designed for engineering and scientific
calculations.
The International Business machines Corporation, better
known as IBM, is one of the biggest technology
companies in the world, with operations is more than
170 countries and over 345,000 employees worldwide.
Mainframe Computer –ie IBM 704 (1961)
Personal Computer –ie Hewlett- Packard 9100A
(1968), Apple 1 (1976)
 The 9100A was the world’s first programmable scientific desktop
calculator, capable of trigonometric, logarithmic (log/In), and
exponential functions.
 Hewlett Packard began to develop the 9100A after being approached
by two inventors, Thomas E. Osborne and Malcolm McMillian,
with their own separate calculator devices.
 In 1975, Steve Wozniak designed the Apple I as his personal computer
to use the ARPANET and play games.
Personal Computer –ie Hewlett Packard
9100A (1968), Apple 1 (1976)
OHP LCD Projector (1980)
 An overhead projector (often abbreviated to OHP), like a film or slide projector,
uses light to project an enlarged image on a screen, allowing the view of a small
document or picture to be shared with a large audience.
 Overhead projectors were widely used in education and business before the
advent of computer-based projection. The overhead projector facilitates an easy
low-cost interactive environment for educators.
 An LCD projector is a type of video projector for displaying video, images or
computer data on a screen or other flat surface.
 An LCD projector works on transmissive technology. LCD projectors are more
popular than many alternatives due to the fact that they are cheaper to produce
and have excellent color reproduction. They are commonly used in business
