By the 1800s scientists had started sorting out the
elements into groups but could not agree on a way to
organise them. Many elements had not yet been
discovered. In 1869, a Russian scientist called Dmitri
Mendeleev put elements in order by how heavy they
were.

He made a chart and called it the Periodic


Table. He called the columns Groups.
Elements that are in the same groups do the
same sort of things (for example all the
elements in group 1 are very reactive).
