• Landlocked country in the western part of the Sahel

• One of the world’s poorest countries- GNI= US$950

• Much of the country is classified as ‘hyperarid’ or desert, with 75% receiving less than 300mm of
rainfall.

• 80% of the population and most food production areas are concentrated in 10-15% of land area. A
barrow band to the south.

• Most crops are rain fed, with considerable variations from year to year.
