• Reading is looking and analysing a set of
written words and or symbols to interpret them and understand what the writer was trying to communicate. • Reading is a cognitive process that involves decoding written or printed words to derive meaning from them. • A reader can understand the writer’s viewpoint and feelings on a particular topic. CHARACTERISTICS OF READING • It is an active process. • It is a cognitive process. • It is linguistic. • It may require a certain degree of fluency to properly enjoy the experience. • It is a comprehensive process because it requires analysis to understand and derive meaning from the item in particular. • It is sequential. Reading is based on a simple set of building blocks that is words to sentences to paragraphs to chapters and the full article. • There is proper engagement of readers during the experience because they tend to imagine or predict what may be coming next. • Reading is continuous and a life-long engagement because the more one reads, the higher the level of complexity they will be able to read and digest with ease. TYPES OF READING • Skimming. This is reading quickly to simply get an overview of the text. • Extensive reading. This is reading particularly for leisure as often the case in novel reading. • Intensive reading. This is reading that involves deep analysis to grasp the content for future use or reference, most common in academics. • Scanning. This is reading where only a very particular bit of the article is being looked for. • Reading to accumulate knowledge. This is where one reads to simply gather information on various topics. • Reading to interpret messages. • Reading to understand context. This is reading for the purpose of understanding the circumstances or background to the story in particular. • Vocabulary and language development. This is reading to widen one’s scope of grammar.
