EVOLUTIO

N
Unit (6)
Lesson (6.4)

1
Lesson Objectives:

1. Understand Natural
Selection
2. Define Evolution

2
3
Natural Selection
■ Natural Selection is a result of genetic variation.

■ Some individuals have genes that produce characteristics which

enable them to survive in a particular environment as they provide
them with the best adaptations to a particular environment, these
organisms will survive and reproduce. They will pass on their genes
to their offspring over many generations. And, their population
increases in number
■ Natural selection is also known as:
‘survival of the fittest’

4
What is Evolution?
■ Natural selection happens continuously and can lead
to the formation of new species.

■ New species from as a result of the gradual change

of characteristics in an organism overtime

■ The gradual change of characteristics over time in

one population due to natural selection is known as
‘Evolution’

■ Organisms evolve because; the environment they live

in changes over time and so they need to adapt and
change their characteristics to survive.

5
Evolution of Horses

6
Evolution of Giraffes

7
Who is Charles
Darwin?
■ He developed the theory of Evolution by
Natural Selection

■ He thought that only the best organisms

would survive in certain environments

■ He believed a group of organisms would

evolve differently if they lived in different
environments
