Smile is the internet bank owned by the Co-operative movement, part of The Co-operative Bank, which along with The Co-operative Insurance, The Co-operative Investments and Britannia we make up The Co-operative Banking Group family. - first bank of the internet generation - principles of fair deal for everyone from customers to suppliers

Some of the banks which operate exclusively online and constitute potential competitors are:

ING Direct (part of ING Financial Group)


EGG (part of CitiGroup) CAHOOT. The first two are larger with regards to number of customers worldwide whilst the third is more similar to Smile Bank in terms of its operations. As expected all of the above mentioned banks consider security in online transactions of the highest importance. Online Banking
Security is a key element in online banking. There are two different security methods for online banking. 1. PIN/TAN system 2. Signature based online banking Potential threats still existing are phishing and pharming. Countermeasures - digital certificates - card readers
