REG.NO: BBA233082 COURSE INSTRUCTOR: MAM SAEEDA IBRAHIM SOCIAL ISSSUE: POVERTY INTRODUCTION • Poverty, a multifaceted social issue, is not merely the absence of financial resources but a state of deprivation that affects individuals, families, and entire communities. • Understanding its depth is crucial to finding sustainable solutions. WHAT IS POVERTY: We can define poverty as the condition where the basic needs of a family, like food, shelter, clothing, and education are not fulfilled. It can lead to other problems like poor literacy, unemployment, malnutrition, etc. GLOBAL OVERVIEW: • According to the World Bank, over 700 million people globally live in extreme poverty, surviving on less than $1.90 per day. • Poverty comes in various forms, ranging from absolute poverty, where basic needs for survival are unmet, to relative poverty, where individuals lack access to the social and economic resources available in society. TYPES OF POVERTY: • Situational poverty • Generational poverty • Absolute poverty • Relative poverty • Urban poverty • Rural poverty CAUSES OF POVERTY:
• Lack of access to quality education
• Lack of access to job opportunities • Unemployment & Underemployment • Health Issues • Discrimination based on gender, race, or socioeconomic status • Inadequate social safety nets and economic inequality IMPACT OF POVERTY: • Social Consequences • Health & Nutrition • Education & Opportunities • Limited access to basic needs • Social exclusion and inequality • Inter-generational impact SOLUTIONS: • Education Initiatives • Employment Opportunities • Social Welfare Programs • Access to financial services • Social safety nets • Infrastructure development • Empowering women and marginalized groups • Sustainable economic development STEPS TAKEN AS INDIVIDUAL: • Poverty is a social evil, we can also contribute to control it. • For example- we can simply donate old clothes to poor people • we can also sponsor the education of a poor child or we can utilize our free time by teaching poor students. • Remember before wasting food, somebody is still sleeping hungry. WE SHOULD REMOVE POVERTY: STEPS TAKEN BY GOVERNMENT: • Government has also taken steps for the cheap availability of seeds & farming equipment to promote agriculture. • Government is also promoting farming of cash crops like cotton, instead of food crops. • In cities, the government is promoting industrialization to create more jobs. Government has also opened ‘Ration shops’. • Other measures include providing free & compulsory education for children up to 14 years of age, scholarship to deserving students from a poor background, providing subsidized houses to poor people, etc. CONCLUSION: • Addressing poverty requires a combination of strategies such as education, access to financial services, social safety nets, infrastructure development, empowerment of marginalized groups, and sustainable economic development. • By implementing these solutions, we can make significant progress in alleviating poverty and creating a more equitable society. • It's important for governments, organizations, and individuals to work together towards these goals. • Remember, every effort, no matter how small, can make a difference in someone's life.
