GENDER

DISCRIMINATION
What is Gender
Discrimination
Gender discrimination is
unequal or
disadvantageous
treatment of an individual
or group of individuals
based on gender.
Gender Discrimination are commonly
found at:
• School
*Verbal Harassment and Bullying*
Insults, derogatory comments, or teasing
targeting a student's gender can create a hostile
and uncomfortable environment.

*Sexual Harassment*
Unwanted advances, comments, or gestures related to
a student's gender can create a threatening or
uncomfortable atmosphere.
• Work
An employee or a job applicant is treated
differently or less favorably because of their sex,
gender identity, or sexual orientation.

Example:
Women are promoted less often than men:
Despite being more educated than men and
constituting nearly half of the workforce, women are
promoted at work far less often than men. One reason
cited for why more women aren’t moving into higher-
up executive- type roles is the lack of female role
models in the workplace.
Problems of Gender Discrimination
• Harms Mental Health and Physical Health
Gender discrimination is a source of stress, and like any other stressor, it can directly
affect mental health. Depending on the situation, facing discrimination can also
result in anxiety and psychological trauma.

• Gender inequality
Significantly impacts mental health, leading to higher stress, anxiety, depression,
and post-traumatic stress disorder in women and marginalized individuals. Direct
effects include violence, prejudice, socioeconomic disparity, persistent stress, and
negative media messages.
• Job segregation
An employee or a job applicant is treated
differently or less favorably because of their
sex, gender identity, or sexual orientation.
Not being hired, or being given a lower-paying
position because of your gender identity or
sexual orientation (for example, when an
employer refuses to hire women, or only hires
women for certain jobs).
“GOVERNMENT PROGRAMS TO SOLVE
THE PROBLEM”
THE MAGNA CARTA OF WOMEN (REPUBLIC ACT NO. 9710)
DEFINES GENDER AND DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM (GAD)
- as the development perspective and process that is
participatory and empowering, equitable, sustainable, free
from violence, respectful of human rights, supportive of
self determination and actualization of human potentials.
It seeks to achieve gender equality as a fundamental
values that should be reflected in development choices
and contends that women are active agents of
development, not just passive recipients of development.
RA 6725 OR THE PROHIBITION ON DISCRIMINA
TION AGAINST WOMEN
Prohibition on Discrimination Against Women

RA 6725 prohibits discrimination with respect to terms and

conditions of employment solely on the basis of sex. Under this
law, any employer favoring a male employee over a female in
terms of promotion, training opportunities, and other benefits
solely on account of sex is considered discrimination.
