BATAK TRIBE

INTRODUCTION
• The Batak tribe is an indigenous group found in the Northeastern
parts of palawan.Batak people are also known as the Tinitianes.The
Batak have a distinctive cultural heritage and traditional way of life.
Also they have historically lived in small, temporary settlements and
practiced a semi-nomadic lifestyle. Their primary livelihood revolve
around hunting, gathering, and subsistence farming. According to the
2020 census that they are one of the smallest indigenous groups in
the country, with population of around 1,500 indiviuals. They have
people have their own language , spiritual beliefs and practices rooted
in animism.
GEOGRAPHY
• The Batak is one of the indigenous of Palawan
• Since ancient time they have inhabited a series of river valleys
along time the 50 kilometers stretch of coastline Northeast of
Palawan what is today Puerto Princesa City.
• They are considered to be negrito’s stock.
• Their physical attribute show short structure, dark skin, curly
hair, that earned these distinctive looking people their name.
Economic Activities
• They have successfully combines hunting, fishing, and gathering of forest
products with shifting agriculture.
• Rice, roots and vegetables are grown, and at the peak of dry season in march
the gardens are burned to the ground.
• The batak cultivated a field, they leave it follow for several years. New
gardens are planted in April when the rain arrives.
• Women fish with a hook and line, the whole community works together to
catch fish by stunning them with a plant-based poison.
• The most highly prized game is the wild pig.
• They also collect leaves, fruits, tubers and palm hearts for food, as well as
resin, rattan canes and wild honey to sell.
Traditional Politics Structures
• The batak tribe has a unique political structure that is deeply intertwined with their cultural
and spiritual beliefs.
• They don’t have a formal political system not just like in the modern societies.
• Leadership roles within the batak tribe are often held by elder members of the community.
• They also have spiritual leaders, known as shamans, who play a significant role in their
society.
• They are highly respected and their advice is often sought in matters concerning the
community.
• They have laws that called Social Laws , each of them must follow.
