BIO BLITZ ACTIVITY

- WE RECENTLY EMBARKED ON A WALKING TOUR
AROUND OUR CAMPUS, WITH THE OBJECTIVE OF
IDENTIFYING AND STUDYING THE UNIQUE TRAITS OF
VARIOUS TREE SPECIES.
- DURING OUR TRIP, WE ENCOUNTERED SEVERAL
TREES THAT ARE COMMONLY FOUND IN ARID AND
SEMI-ARID REGIONS OF RAJASTHAN. FIRST, WE SAW
THE KHEJRI TREE, WHICH IS THE STATE TREE OF
RAJASTHAN. THIS DROUGHT-RESISTANT TREE CAN
TOLERATE HARSH CONDITIONS.
OVERVIEW- - NEXT, WE CAME ACROSS THE BABOOL TREE, A
SPECIES OF THORN TREE THAT IS WIDELY
DISTRIBUTED ACROSS AFRICA AND THE INDIAN
SUBCONTINENT. IT HAS SEVERAL USES, INCLUDING
MEDICINE, FODDER, AND FUELWOOD.
- WE ALSO LEARNED ABOUT THE NEEM TREE, A
VERSATILE AND NATIVE INDIAN TREE THAT HAS
NUMEROUS MEDICINAL AND AGRICULTURAL
APPLICATIONS. IT CAN WITHSTAND HIGH
TEMPERATURES AND LOW WATER CONDITIONS.
- WE ALSO SAW THE PEEPAL TREE, A LARGE FIG TREE
THAT IS COMMONLY FOUND IN URBAN AREAS OF
INDIA. ITS BROAD, THICK LEAVES PROVIDE AMPLE
SHADE.
CHARACTERISTICS
OF KHEJRI TREE
Drought Tolerance: Khejri trees are well adapted to dry conditions and can
withstand prolonged periods of drought. They have deep root systems that
allow them to access water from deep soil layers, enabling them to survive in
water-deficient environments.
Nitrogen Fixation: Khejri trees have nodules on their roots that contain
nitrogen-fixing bacteria. These bacteria can convert atmospheric nitrogen into
a form that the tree can use as a nutrient, helping the tree survive in nutrient-
poor soils.
Deciduous Nature: Khejri trees are deciduous, shedding their leaves during
the dry season to conserve water. This adaptation reduces water loss through
transpiration and helps the tree survive during periods of water scarcity.
Salt Tolerance: Khejri trees can tolerate moderate levels of soil salinity,
making them suitable for growing in areas where salt content in the soil is
relatively high.
CHARACTERISTICS OF ROHIDA
PLANT
• In our campus, the Rohida tree (Tecomella undulata) is native
and commonly found, the insects feeding on Rohida flowers
would likely include species adapted to the arid and semi-arid
conditions prevalent in the region.
