VARIATIONS

◦ DIRECT VARIATION:

◦ “y” varies directly as x.

◦ “y” varies directly proportional to x.
◦ “y” is proportional to x.

◦ Take note: for two quantities, “x and y” an increase to “x”

causes an increase to “y” as well as decreases in “x”
causes decreasing to “y” also.
Write the equations for the given variation using
“K” as the constant of variation :
◦ ‘x’ is directly proportional to “y”

x = ky

◦ The height (h) varies directly proportional to weight (w)

h = kw

◦ The fare (f) of a passenger varies directly as the distance of his acceleration (a)
f = ka
◦ Example # 1 : if y varies directly as x & y is 20 , an x = 5 ; find the
constant of variation.

y = kx
y = 20 ; x = 5

SOLUTION: 20 = k(5)
20 = 5k

k=4
◦ Example # 2 : if y varies directly as x , and y = 12 ; when x = 4 find y
when x = 20.

◦ y = 12 ; X = 4 ; X = 20

◦ SOLVE FOR K : y = kx
◦ Y = kx y = 3 (20)
◦ 12 = K (4) = 60
◦ 12 = 4K

◦K=3
◦ Example # 3 : If 8 oranges cost $ 10.40, how many oranges can be bought for $
33.80?

◦ 8 Orange cost = $10.40

◦ Cost = $33.88

◦ C = kC No. of oranges can be bought:

◦ $33.80 = k($10.40) O = k(8)
◦ $33.40 = $10.40k Oranges = (3.25) (8)

◦ Oranges : 26
◦ K = 3.25
◦ INVERSE VARIATION :

◦ For two quantities x and y an increase in x causes an increase

in y or vice versa
◦ “y varies inversely to x”
Formula:
y=
◦ SEAT WORK # 2 _ Q2 – DIRECT VARIATION
◦ Part I :
◦ 1. If 18 dolls cost $ 630, how many dolls can be bought for $ 455?
◦ 2. Drew get paid hourly at his job. If Drew gets 50 dollars for a 5hrs
shift, how much will he be paid for a 7hrs shift. Find K.
◦ 3. If car covers 102 km in 6.8 liters of petrol, how much distance will
it cover in 24.2 liters of petrol?
◦ SEAT WORK # 2 – INVERSE VARIATION
◦ Part II :

◦ 1.) If 32 men can recap a field in 15 days, in how many days can 20 men reap the same
field?

◦ 2.) 12 men can dig a pond in 8 days. How many men can dig it in 6 days?

◦ 3.) A hostel has enough food for 125 students for 16 days. How long will the food last if 75
more students join them?
◦Joint Variation:

◦ Some quantities, as in area or volume , may involve three or

more variables simultaneously:

◦ Statements :
“y” varies jointly as w and x “  y = kwx
◦ Write the equations of the ff :

◦ 1.) the volume of the cylinder varies jointly as the square of it’s radius
“r” and height “h”

V = kr2h

2.) w varies jointly as x, y, z  w = kxyz

◦ Example # 1 : “d” varies jointly as “e and f” ; if d = 1.2 , when 0.3 is e then f is
0.4 , find the constant variation, hence find d if e and f is 6 and 10.

◦ Example # 2 : x varies jointly as w , y and z ; if x = 18 when w = 2 ,

◦ y = 6 and z = 5 ; find x when w is 5, y is equals to 12 and z is equivalent to 3.
◦ 1.)y varies jointly as x and z. If y = 5 when x = 3 and z = 4, find y when x = 6
and z = 8.
◦ 2.) y varies jointly as x and z. If y = 12 when x = 4 and z = 3, find y when x =
9 and z = 8.
◦ 3.) The variable x is in joint variation with y and z. When the values of y
and z are 4 and 6, x is 16. What is the value of x when y = 8 and z =12?
◦ 4.) Strawberries varied jointly as plums and tomatoes. If 500 strawberries
went with 4 plums and 25 tomatoes, how many plums would go with 40
strawberries and 2tomatoes?
◦ 5.) The number of potatoes varied jointly as the number of mules and the
number of farmers squared. If 5 mules and 5 farmers went with 750
potatoes, how many potatoes went with 10 mules and 10 farmers?
◦Combined Variation: this kind of variation involves
both direct and inverse variation.

Thus: if “y” varies directly as x and inversely as “w”

then the formula is :

y=
Example # 1: “P varies directly as “q” and the square of “r” and
inversely as s and p = 14 , q = 7 , r = 2 and s = 4.

p=

Example # 2: If x varies directly as the square of “y” and inversely as z

and x = 12 when y = 3 and z = 6

x=
1.) The number of rabbits varied directly as the number of squirrels and inversely as the number of
raccoons. When there were 10 rabbits and 40 squirrels there were only 2 raccoons. How many raccoons
went with 5 rabbits and 20 squirrels?

2.) Reds varied directly as yellows and inversely as greens squared. If 100 reds and 40 yellows went with 10
greens, how may reds went with 20 yellows and only 5 greens?

3.) Blues varied directly as greens and inversely as whites squared. If there were 3 greens when there were 4
blues and 2 whites, how many greens were required for 2 blues and 4 whites?

4.) The number of girls varied directly as the number of boys and inversely as the number of teachers.
When there were 50 girls, there were 20 teachers and 10 boys. How many boys were there when there were
10 girls and 100 teachers?

5.) The number of hours (h) that it takes m men to assemble x machines varies directly as the number of
machines and inversely as the number of men. If four men can assemble 12 machines in four hours, how
many men are needed to assemble 36 machines in eight hours?
◦ In Hybe Corporation Sales of albums in 1st quarter , Enhypen
Albums varied directly as Tomorrow x Together Albums and
inversely as BTS Albums squared. When the albums contained
1,394,737 BTS’ Butter/Permission to Dance Album sold and
there were 501,708 Enhypen DIMENSION:DILEMMA Album
sold first 24hrs or First day and only 430,745 TXT’ The Chaos
