Objectives
At the end of the lesson, the students should be able to:

1. Define the music of the Romantic period.


2. Identify the types of music in the Romantic period.
Music of the Romantic Period

▪ It is described as a cultural movement that stressed emotions, imagination,


individualism and freedom of expression.
▪ Nationalism was also incorporated in their music. E.g. “Polonaise” of
Frederic Chopin, is a dance composition for piano, and is famous in Poland
until today.
▪ Ludwig Van Beethoven bridged the music from Classical to Romantic
period.
▪ Piano music of Romantic period is in free form. Program music was also
expressed in tone poems, such as Symphony Fantastique.
▪ Most of the musical compositions of the era portray literature, history,
emotions, and nature.

Violin and Strings Music

 During the Romantic period, the


orchestra had become a great force due to
its increasing size. Most of the instruments
that can be found in the orchestra are
string instruments.

 The string section expanded, but the


same four instruments: violin, viola, cello,
and double bass remained. In addition, the
number of each string instrument also
increased..
Piano Music

 The piano music significantly evolved


during the Romantic period. It was
filled with innovations such as the
physical keys expanded from five to
eight octave. These improvements
enriched the pitch range of the piano.

 Most of the composers require a high


sense of virtuosity because they were
often more than just composers. They
are also performers and conductors.
Program Music

 Program music is an
instrumental composition that
conveys images or scenes to tell a
short story without text or lines. It
entices the imagination of the
listeners.
