Grade 11 STEM
DERIVATIVES
LEARNING OUTCOMES:
At the end of the lesson, the learner shall be able to:

Illustrate the tangent line to the graph of a function at a given point;

Apply the definition of the derivative of a function at a given
number; and
Relate the derivative of a function to the slope of the tangent line.
INTRODUCTION TO DERIVATIVES
The Tangent Line to the Graph of a Function at a
Point.

Recall from Geometry

How do you define

tangent and secant?
Tangent line to a circle.

A line that touches the circle at a single point is known as a tangent to a

circle. The point where tangent meets the circle is called point of tangency.
The tangent is perpendicular to the radius of the circle, with which it
intersects

Secant
is an extension of a chord in a circle which is a straight line segment of
which the endpoints lie on the circle. If the same chord passes through the
centre of the circle, then it is a diameter. So an extended Diameter is a
secant.
HOW TO DRAW TANGENT LINES TO CURVES AT APOINT

The definition of a tangent is not very easy to explain without involving

limits. One can imagine that locally, the curves looks like an arc of a circle.
Hence, we can draw the tangent line to the curve as we would to a circle
