Background
Tips in writing a good lead
1. Includes only the 5Ws & H which are
impt.
2. Start with the most impt. or interesting
feature
3. 25–30words
4. Begins with specific, interest – arousing
word
5. If possible avoid beginnings such as – a,
an, the; as a meeting
6. Avoid overloading the lead
7. Identifies the persons mentioned
EXAMPLE:
(Primary or Main Lead) - An 11 – year – old girl playing in her
room escaped death but suffered minor injuries when lightning hit a
tree near their house in San Pedro, Laguna yesterday.
(Secondary or Support Lead) - The victim, Nelia Reyes, was
brought to San Pedro Community Hospital for minor burns in the
body.

(Details or Particulars) - A witness said that lightning set the tree


on fire which spread to the nearby house where the girl was playing.

(Background) - Doctors at the hospital said the victim will be


released after two days.
