SHEAR AND MOMENT IN BEAMS

GRADE COMPLETION FOR THE SUBJECT MECH 314

PRESENTED BY: ALJON O. CABAHUG

INSTRUCTOR: ENGR. ALELIE ALEJO
Shear and Moment in Beams
• The term beam refers to a slender bar that carries transverse loading; that is,
the applied force are perpendicular to the bar.

Types of Staticallydeterminate beams.

Sign conventions for external loads; shear force,
and bending moment
Degree of a slope
Shear and moment Diagram

Ways to solve shear and moment diagrams.

Method of Sections - V and M as functions of x for each

segment of the beam between a change in loading point
or discontinuity in loading

Method of Area - change in shear equals the area under

the loading diagram and change in moment equals the
area under the shear diagram.
SAMPLE PROBLEMS IN SHEAR
AND MOMENT IN BEAMS
SAMPLE PROBLEM 1
The simply supported beam carries two concentrated
loads. (1) Derive the expressions for the shear force and the bending
moment for each segment of the beam. (2) Sketch the shear force
and bending moment diagrams. Neglect the weight of the beam.
SAMPLE PROBLEM 2
The simply supported beam in Fig. (a) is loaded by the clockwise
couple C0 at B. (1) Derive the shear and bending moment
equations. And (2) draw the shear force and bending moment
diagrams. Neglect the weight of the beam.
SAMPLE PROBLEM 3
The cantilever beam in Fig.(a) carries a triangular load. The intensity of
which varies from zero at the left end to 360 lb/ft at the right end. In
addition, a 1000-lb upward vertical load acts at the free end of the
beam. (1) Derive the shear force and bending moment equations. And
(2) draw the shear force and bending moment diagrams. Neglect the
weight of the beam.
SAMPLE PROBLEM 4
The simply supported beam in Fig. (a) supports 30-kN concentrated
force at B and a 40-kN•m couple at D.Derive the shear and bending
moment equations and sketch the shear force and
beading moment diagrams by the area method. Neglect the weight
of the beam.
SAMPLE PROBLEM 5
The overhanging beam in Fig. (a) carries two uniformly distributed
loads and a concentrated load. Using the area method, draw the
shear force and bending moment diagrams for the beam and determine
the maximum shear and moment.
SAMPLE PROBLEM 6
Derive the shear and bending moment equations and draw the shear
and moment diagrams for the following cantilever beam.
SAMPLE PROBLEM 7
Draw the shear and moment diagrams for the following beam using the
area method and determine the maximum shear and moment.
SAMPLE PROBLEM 8
Draw the shear and moment diagrams for the following beam and
determine the maximum shear and moment.
SAMPLE PROBLEM 9
Draw the loading diagram and bending moment diagram from a given
shear force diagram which rest on two supports, one being at the left
hand end. All forces are in KN.
SAMPLE PROBLEM 10
Draw the load and the bending moment diagrams that correspond to the
given shear force diagram in Figure 3. Assume no couples are applied to
the beam.
