1879 held a literary contest that offered a prize for the best poem. • When this event happened, Rizal was only eighteen years old. • Rizal decided to leave the country for Europe
after completing his medical course in UST (University of Santo Tomas). • The purpose is to complete his medical course in Barcelona, Spain. Rizal’s Secret Departure Rizal’s Secret Departure
• Rizal left Calamba on May 1, 1882.
• After 10 days, he reached Manila. • No one in his family knew except for Paciano, Saturnina, Tito Antonio and his friends. • His brother Paciano took care of everything so that Rizal can leave the country secretly and secured Rizal’s passport with the name f Jose Mercado. • He scheduled to depart from Manila on third day of May then board the cruiser Salvadora to Singapore. • After one week of sailing, the cruiser
docked in Singapore and stayed for 2 days. • After that, he board on the ship Djemnah with French nationals. • The ship sails to France, Naples and Marseilles in which he took a train to Barcelona in June 15, 1882. Itinerary Travel to Spain
• From Philippines to Barcelona, it had his
consiquences. • In his interaction on the board of the Salvadora and Djemnah: Sudden change in his religion look. He started becoming inattentive to saints and patron saints. Rizal in Barcelona • He was welcomed by the Filipinos. • The welcome party was held at his coffee house at Plaza de Cataluña. • Rizal wrote a nationalistic essay entitled “AMOR PATRIO” (Love of Country) and sent it to his friend named Basilio Teodoro Moran to the Diaryong Tagalog , it was published on August 20, 1882. • Then the “Los Viajes” (travels) and the other one, “Revisita de Madrid” under his pen name “Laong Laan”. • On November 3, 1882, Rizal enrolled in Universidad Central de Madrid in two courses: • Medicine, Philosophy and Letters.
