Introduction
• The 2D materials like WS2, MoS2, WSe2 etc have attracted increased research interest in the present decade due to
their interesting electrical , optical and mechanical properties.
• Here are some of the potential application in gas sensing , photocatalysis , optical and electronic device and energy
storage.

The bandgap of WS2 is

reported to be tuned from
1.8eV to 5eV by making
quantum dots of different
sizes.

Characterization
Here in we have characterized our WS 2 compound by the following
characterization process:

• XRD Characterization (1% and 4% Nb-doped WS2)

• FESEM Characterization
• FTIR Characterization
• UV-Vis Characterization
• PL (Photoluminescence) Characterization

The atomic weight percentage of the elements contained in the samples recorded during
EDAX analysis are shown in the inset of the figures. Both the samples showed presence of
Tungsten, Sulphur, Oxygen and Niobium.
FTIR Characterization:
The broad absorption band in the range 500 – 1000cm -1 can be
ascribed due to the vibration modes of W-O (FTIR-WO 3). The
medium sharp bands between 3700‑3584 cm-1 can be related to
the OH stretching of the intercalated atmospheric water
molecules (IR spectrum table-Sigma Aldrich). 1632 and 1523
cm-1 can be ascribed due to the stretching vibration of the
hydroxyl group.

The shift of the 579cm-1 vibrational mode due to Nb-O

observed in the 1% doped sample to 594 cm-1 in 4% Nb
doped sample can be noticed clearly
UV-Vis Characterization

The Tauc plot indicates a red

shift in the band gap of the 4%
doped WS2/WO3 sample as
compared to the sample doped
with 1% Nb.
PL (Photoluminescence) Characterization
• A broad PL peak having a minor shift with the excitation wavelength ranging between 230-280 nm
indicates polydispersity in QD size, which is natural in a facile synthesis process.
• Nb acts as a p type dopant in WS2. Increasing the Nb dopant percentage increases the acceptor states near the
Fermi level of WS2.
• B exciton is quenched in the PL spectra because of the exciton scattering at the localized acceptor states.
Inference
• WS2/WO3 QDs are synthesized by a facile solution based process.
• The structural and Morphological properties are being characterized.
• Optical properties are investigated.
• PL is used to investigate the carrier and excitonic dynamics within the synthesized
QDs.
• The bandgap of the core material of the hybrid WS2/WO3 nano structure can be tuned
to specific application by Nb-doping like photodetectors and light emitting devices.
