Introduction about fick’s laws
 Diffusion is defined as the movement of individual molecules of a substance through a
semipermeable barrier from an area of higher concentration to an area of lower
concentration.

 Fick's first law

● Fick's law states that the rate of diffusion of a substance across unit area is
proportional to the concentration gradient.

 Fick's second law

● Fick's second law shows how diffusion causes the concentration to change with
respect to time.
Fick’s first law
According to the Fick’s first law, the flux J is proportional to the
concentration gradient .

𝑑𝐶
𝐽 =− 𝐷 The negative sign indicates that, the atomic flux will be in such a
𝑑𝑥 way as to minimize the concentration gradient.

 J is the diffusion flux, J measures the amount of substance that will flow
through a unit area during a unit time interval.

 D is the diffusion coefficient .

 is the Concentration gradient.

Cross Sectional
Area A Δx

x x +Δx
Δv = Δx A

mass entering Δv at x in time interval Δt,

mass leaving Δv at x+Δx in time interval Δt,

mass accumulating in Δv in time interval Δt,

concentration change in Δv in time interval Δt,

Changing it into the differential equation,

replacing j using Fick's first law,

This is also known as continuity equation

Fick’s Second law
The rate of change of concentration of the solution at a point in space is
proportional to the second derivative of concentration with space.
