RATIONALE FOR

CONTRACEPTION
OBJECTIVES
At the end of this presentation learners
should be able to:
Define contraception
Identify importance of contraception
CONTRACEPTION
• The deliberate use of artificial methods
or other techniques to prevent
pregnancy and the spread of STIs as a
consequence of sexual intercourse.
RATIONALE FOR CONTRACEPTION
 Preventing pregnancy related health risks in
women
The women`s ability to choose if and when to
become pregnant has a direct impact on her
health and well being.Family planning allows
spacing of pregnancies and can delay
pregnancies in young women at increased risk
of health problems and death from early child
bearing.
CONT…
Reducing infant mortality
Family planning can prevent closely spaced
and ill timed pregnancies and births, which
contribute to some of the world`s highest
infant mortality rate.Infants of mothers
who die as result of giving birth also have a
greater risk of death and poor health.
CONT…
Helping to prevent HIV/AIDs
Contraception reduces the risk of
unintended pregnancies among women
living with HIV,resulting in fewer infected
babies and orphans.In addition,male and
female condoms provide dual protection
against unintended pregnancies and STIs
including HIV.
CONT…
 Empowering people and enhencing education
Conctraception enables people to make
informed choices about their sexual and
reproductive health.Contraception represents an
opportunity for women to persue additional
education and participate in public life, including
paid employment in non family
organisation.Additionally,having smaller families
allows parents to invest more in each child.
CONT…
 Reducing adolescent pregnancies
Pregnant adolescents are mostly likely to
have preterm or low weight babies.Babies
born to adolescents have higher rates of
neonatal mortality.Many adolescent girls who
become pregnant have to leave schools. This
have long-term implecations for them as
individuals,their families and communities.
CONT…
Slowing population growth
Contraceptive use slows population
growth.This is important because over
population puts pressure on the
environment,the economy and services
such as education and health.
