Definition
It is an oral hormonal contraceptive which contains
progestogen only.
Examples are ; Microval, Overette, Microlut and
others.One pill is taken regularly at the same time
everyday without break, regardless of the bleeding
pattern.
MODE OF ACTION
The progestogen only pill has two modes of action;
Thickens cervical mucous thus inhibiting sperm
penetration into the uterus.
Suppresses ovulation in at least half of the cycle
HOW THE COMMODITY WORKS
(EFFECTIVENESS)
There is no delay in return of fertility after
discontinuation
POP does not protect against Sexually Transmitted
Infections
INDICATIONS
POPs are appropriate for any women who request
them provided if they do not have any
contraindications to use progestin only pills.
Breastfeeding mothers
CONTRAINDICATIONS
There are conditions which inhibit the use of progestin
only pill.
If the client is already pregnant
The client is already taking certain medication
Impaired liver fuctions
ADVANTAGES OF POP
Effective and safe
Do not affect breast milk production
Pelvic exam is not required to allow use
Return to fertility is immediate upon discontinuation.
DISADVANTAGES
Bleeding may be irregular, light, more frequent, lasts
longer or stop.
They do not protect against Sexually Transmitted
Infections.
One pill has to be taken at the same time everyday.

Changes in bleeding pattern;
-Breakthrough bleeding
