Unitary Method
Used to calculate the unit value for an item to solve problems
1. Find the unit value by first number into the ‘rate’ ($, time, distance,
etc)
2. Multiply to find the ‘cost’ of the given numbers.
Example 1
If 24 golf balls cost $86.40, how Answer:
much do 7 golf balls cost?
Divide 24 into $86.40

86.40 ÷ 24 = $3.60 (unit amount)

∴ 1 golf ball costs $3.60

7 X 3.60 = 25.20
∴ 7 golf balls cost $25.20
Example 2
• Answer:
• A truck drove 245 km in 3.5
hours. How far could it drive in Divide 3.5 into 245
10 hours?
245 ÷ 3.5 = 70 (unit amount)

∴ In one hour the truck can travel 70km

70 X 10 = 700
∴ The truck can travel 700km in 10
hours.
