Pre-Colonial Architecture
Pre-Hispanic Filipinos lived in
traditional houses known as bahay
kubo or nipa hut. This type of house
is typically made of natural material
such as wood, bamboo, and palm
leaves.

The torogan is the traditional dwelling of
the royal families. It is characterized by
salakot-shaped roof, massive posts, and
butterfly-wing floor beam ends, called
panolong. Their okkir carvings usually
feature the pako rabong ang the naga
(serpent) design.
Spanish Colonial Architecture
The bahay na bato or house of stone is
the large and upgraded version of bahay
kubo with some Spanish and Chinese
influence. This type of structure is more
durable because the lower walls were
made of bricks or stone.
Colonial Churches
UNESCO listed 4 Baroque churches in the
Philippines as World Heritage Sites. These are:
• San Agustin Church in Intramurus,
Manila
• Sta. Maria Church in Sta. Maria Ilocos
Sur
• Paoay Church in Paoay, Ilocos Norte
