CHAPTER-2

STRUCTURE OF ATOM
PLANCK’S EQUATION
• Energy is radiated in the discontinuous manner, in the small packets called as
quantas or quantums.
• A photon is a tiny particle that comprises waves of electromagnetic radiation.
• The amount of energy associated with the quantas is proportional to the
frequency of radiation
• E ∝ ʋ (frequency) so E = h ʋ (h= Planck’s constant= 6.626*10^34 J s)

Ques. Calculate and compare the

energies of the radiations, one
with the wavelength of 400 nm
and other with 800 nm.
Ques. 3* 10^18
photons of a certain light
radiation are found to
produce 1.5 Joules of
energy. Calculate the
wavelength of light
radiations.
(h = 6.63 * 10^34 J s)

PHOTOELECTRIC EFFECT

• More the brightness (or intensity) of light, more will be the ejection of
electrons from the metal surface.
• More the frequency of the radiation, more will be the kinetic energy of the
ejected electrons from the metal surface.
• There is no time lag in the irradiation of radiations and ejection of
photoelectrons from the surface of metal.
