2
I. Overview

3
This project aims to develop a device that
irrigates dry lands or drought-stricken areas in the
Philippines using a land moisture sensor. The
device irrigates the land based on the sensor's
readings, ensuring efficient water usage and
thorough irrigation.

4
II. Problem domain

5
A. STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
Inefficient water usage in conventional irrigation practices

Lack of precision in existing irrigation methods

Hindrance to optimal plant growth and agricultural productivity

Need for a responsive system capable of detecting and responding

to the dryness of the land

6
B. BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES
This project aims to address the challenges of
watering plants in dry lands by using an
automatic sprinkler irrigation system. This
solution utilizes sensors to accurately measure
soil moisture and release water only when
necessary, preventing water wastage and
promoting efficient irrigation practices.
7
OBJECTIVES
To design and develop an automatic irrigation system that can conserve
water

To design a system that can efficiently moisturize drought areas and lands

To promote the adoption of an Automatic Irrigation System

8
B. SIGNIFICANCE AND SCOPE
● This research is significant because it addresses the
growing issue of water shortage caused by global
warming and drought.
● In scope, this research focuses on developing a device
that can accurately measure soil moisture levels and
irrigate dry lands, conserving water and promoting
sustainable agriculture.

9
B. Documentation of the existence & seriousness
of the problem #1
Water scarcity is a severe and growing problem
due to climate change, global warming, and
increasing demand. This issue has led to
ecological disasters, such as the shrinking of the
Aral Sea, and has caused food shortages, health
issues, and conflicts in affected areas.
10
B. Documentation of the existence & seriousness
of the problem #2

Mountainous regions provide fresh water

to a significant portion of the global
population and are particularly vulnerable
to poverty and degradation.

11
B. Documentation of the existence & seriousness
of the problem #3

Water conservation is essential for a

sustainable and healthy environment, as it
can reduce unnecessary water wastage,
save money, and maintain ecosystems.

12
B. Documentation of the existence & seriousness
of the problem #4

Water conservation is essential for a

sustainable and healthy environment, as it
can reduce unnecessary water wastage,
save money, and maintain ecosystems.

13
B. Documentation of the existence & seriousness of
the problem #5
Drought has significant economic impacts
on agriculture, including crop failure,
increased food prices, reduced supplies to
downstream industries, decreased demand
for inputs, and mental health strain on
farmers.

III Review of Related
Literature
.

15
The research focuses on developing an automatic
irrigation system to optimize water use and eliminate
human management in agriculture. The system uses soil
moisture sensors and software technology to determine
when and how much water to deliver, improving crop
yield and conserving water. The study examines various
sprinkler irrigation systems, including their installation,
design, and construction. The goal is to keep hardware
and software costs low while preventing flaws in current
systems and minimizing water waste and runoff.

IV. Framework

17
Automated irrigation systems can increase
efficiency and reduce manual labor. Arduino-
based systems use moisture sensors to detect soil
moisture levels and trigger watering, reducing
human intervention. Various sensors, such as soil
moisture, air humidity, temperature, and
ultrasonic, can determine optimal watering times
for specific plants.
18
V. Project Details

19
The device uses a Soil Moisture Sensor and Arduino
UNO microcontroller to operate a water sprinkler. The
sensor detects soil moisture levels and activates the
sprinkler if the land is dry. The sprinkler stops when the
land is moist enough. The sensor is placed under the
sprinkler, continuously monitoring soil moisture levels
during irrigation until the land is fully moisturized. The
program then cuts off the water supply for efficient use.

A.1 MAIN PARTS
The device used in the research to measure soil moisture
levels consists of an Arduino UNO, a Soil Moisture
Sensor Probe, and a Soil Moisture Sensor Module. The
Soil Moisture Sensor Probe contains a fork-shaped probe
with two conductive pads that act as a variable
potentiometer. At the same time, the Soil Moisture Sensor
Module converts the incoming analog signal to a digital
signal.

method to develop an efficient automatic
sprinkler irrigation system for watering crops and
dry lands, ensuring efficiency through a step-by-
step process, trial and error, and adjustments as
needed.
