CS3491 Artificial intelligence and machine learning

Unit-1

Definition of AI
 The AI is the branch of science which deals with helping

machines find solutions to complex problems in a more

human-like fashion

 Systems that act like humans

 Systems that think like humans

 Systems that think rationally

 Systems that act rationally

Applications of AI
Agents

The computer will need two things,

 Computer vision : To perceive objects
 Robotics : To manipulate and
move them.

An agent is anything that can be viewed as perceiving (i.e)

understanding its environment through sensors and acting upon
that environment through actuators.
Agents
Examples
 Human agent : Eyes, ears and other organs for
sensors.
Hands, legs, mouth and other body
parts for actuators.
 Robotic agents : Cameras and infrared range finders
for sensors
Various motors for actuators
 Software agents : Sensory inputs like keystrokes, file
contents, network packets.
Acts on environment by displaying on
the screen, writing files and
sending network packets.
Agents
 Sensor: Sensor is a device which detects the change in the
environment and sends the information to other electronic
devices. An agent observes its environment through sensors.
 Actuators: Actuators are the component of machines that
converts energy into motion. The actuators are only responsible
for moving and controlling a system. An actuator can be an
electric motor, gears, rails, etc.
 Effectors: Effectors are the devices which affect the environment.
Effectors can be legs, wheels, arms, fingers, wings, fins, and
display screen.
